Mozilla laid off 5% of the company despite constantly claiming that we are healthy and doing well, and that there’s an emergency reserve in case something does go wrong to avoid having to do mass layoffs. They want to “focus resources on Firefox and AI” but fired ~60 engineers and designers and leads instead of moving them around to the products that need more resources. New “temporary” CEO announced last week on a random morning via email and now this. Insane. #layoff #Mozilla

How do they make money?
I thought you were the good guys with your transgender rust devs
Wow from outside it looked like a pretty healthy company
Sorry to read this OP. If any of your impacted colleagues want an in at TikTok, send them my way
Did they freeze hiring?
Do you know if Mozilla provides employment sponsorship?
Only 5%. Why they want to do that? It will not improve anything
Probably role eliminations at departments where actual spending is above budget.
aside from this, how do you like working there? do you feel the "mission"?
In my experience, it just feels like a failing tech company with senior leadership milking it for generational wealth all the way to the bitter end. The Google money makes it easy to avoid the sense of urgency that would be justified otherwise when an organization is failing is badly as Mozilla is. The product organization is a joke, and pretty much everyone in mid level and upper management I've met badly needs to be replaced with competent people. If you can tune all that out, it's a fine place to work.
I really liked working with my team, very friendly and smart crew in general. However, I don’t think the upper management is competent enough to navigate Mozilla out of the situation they’re in. I hate to say it but Mozilla is a declining company that struggles to grow and stay relevant. In the last couple of years lots of ex-FAANG executives have joined Mozilla and they have brought the shitty “layoff culture” and “product, product” mentality to Mozilla when Mozilla isn’t meant to operate in the same way Meta or Twitter does. We are absolutely awful at marketing and the management doesn’t know how to react quickly to market needs and pivot teams as needed. Instead, they keep sunsetting products due to failed marketing and displace/layoff those who were working on it. At Mozilla, working on a new tech or product is super risky because they abandon projects all the time and dump those who were working on them. It’s messed up.
“60 engineers”
Have you tried reading the full sentence? “engineers and designers”
