What to do when you feel unmotivated as a SWE?

I have been with Amazon for 6 years now and starting to feel everything I work on is the same. I have tried different teams (retail, AWS and builder tools) I am very happy with the experience gained at Amazon despite how I feel with my job right now. I am worried changing team or companies will not help. I dread having to read tens or hundreds of docs just to understand the new domain and then end up working on another backend crud service for the hundredth time. Any advice here? Keep grinding or what else can I do to keep myself motivated/stimulated in this field? #engineering #software #swe #amazon

congratulations on opening your eyes. it IS all the same. the best you can do is either try to at least work in a space/product you like to help cope or just detach and clock in/clock out without caring too much over random bullshit (if your teammates wanna bicker tiny details, just smile and nod. it is not worth the stress when we all build inconsequential shitty software).

At about the 4 year mark things start repeating. It's been that way at every tech company I've worked at.

I switched to a role I was uncomfortable with, proved myself I could do it and then switched back to backend development and now appreciate it a bit more. But still boring.

Start doing game dev/ graphics programming on the side. Work as little as possible at your main job. If you are any good you only need to work like 2 hours a day to stay employed. BigTech work is a joke nowadays.

What is the point of doing game dev? It’s just another domain, do you meant dev a game for yourself playing?

To do something actually creative with your skills.
