Have a 2018 civic ~60k miles. Some AC components need to be replaced and was quoted $1500 to repair everything. Kbb resale value is around 12k Wondering if it’s worth paying the 1500 or just sell the car and get another used car for around 25-30k. Is this the turning point where repair costs start to add up. Thoughts ? Tc 170k #cars
Shop around and get another estimate. This sounds like a ripoff. Under all scenarios, you should fix and keep it.
Repair! Also get more quotes. Ac is one thing I’d recommend paying for since it’s tough to throw parts at, its all about good diagnosis and that will cost you 2-300. Find an AC specialist. $1500 sounds like an entire new system, usually its 1 component that fails or leaks, and rarely are modern compressors destroyed by a failing component besides the compressor itself. Only buy an OEM compressor for this vehicle, even if used.
Repair. Also if you’re a bit handy, and it’s not an entire AC unit replacement, odds are you may be able to fix it yourself. I’m a single parent and my kids and I almost always figure out how to repair things ourselves. Ask the shop to send you the video and the part numbers. Look up how to fix it, most likely there is a YouTube video on how to do that exact repair.
Likely it just needs a refrigerant top up
Closed loop, refrigerant should never decrease in volume. There is a leak. Do not use “stop leak” products else you’ll have more parts to repair: those do not work in AC systems.
Keep and repair. Hondas will go 150,000 miles easily. And like folks say, get other bids. Maybe hit up a Honda forum and ask for shop referral in your area
OP, 10th generation Civic's have known problems with A/C compressor. Honda issued a recall for this. Check if you have a recall for this. My AC compressor broke twice and they were repaired under warranty/recall.
See what the dealership offers you for the resale. You’re not going to get 12k for it. Then think about if you can deal with the monthly payments. You should be able to with your tc If you’re not a car person then just repair it. If you like something nicer then think about if you want another monthly expense
