Do my coworkers secretly hate me?

So I noticed certain patterns and was wondering if my coworkers secretly hate me. I have been in this team for 1 year. I didn’t interview in this team, a manager took me with him when he got this team and then he left. 5 of my teammates hang out with each other after work, go on hikes and what not. While we’re all foreigners, I’m the only one from another country so I figured it’s natural since they have more things in common. They probably would need to switch to English if I’m there. But then I notice passive sabotage. For example: - Exclude me from emails or meetings where I should be involved. - They always unblock each other while they don’t unblock me. For example, they will quickly approve pull requests, while I wait days for a review. Similar for design docs, wouldn’t take a look at mine while they are so eager to review each others’. - They would leave me a comment in the PR and after I address it and run tests, they will leave another comment. This would go for days. I even see other people fixing other people’s PRs since it’s more efficient and the PR would be ready when the owner connects the next day. - They wouldn’t tell me things I’m supposed to know so I’m always catching up after the facts, for example, a change that is coming that will force me to re-do my feature. This has had a significant impact in my productivity. Having 4/5 PRs open that I need to constantly iterate at the same time is a nightmare. Features that I should complete (dev/validation/deployment/monitoring) in a week or 2 take up to months sometimes. At my level I’m supposed to do more planning/mentoring work but I barely have cycles left. I used to deliver so much more in my previous team. I will leave this team, but I will always wonder whether my coworkers secretly sabotaged me.

Start looking. Toxic teammates!

Microsoft Brrrrrrre Apr 26

Have you tried talking to them about it?

Microsoft JoeMerlino OP Apr 26

Yes, very carefully, but they acted nice and just said they wanted to be thorough. Which makes sense, but then the way they go about it, dripping comments in PRs every 2 days, makes me think otherwise.

Sign of passive-aggressive behavior. That likely won't stop... Possibly expect surprises at peers review

Are you stuck with Indian team mates?

Microsoft JoeMerlino OP Apr 26

Are your teammates Chinese ?

Microsoft JoeMerlino OP Apr 26

No

Meta naGC68 Apr 26

Leave the team asap. If there is even a slight chance of PIP you’ll get the axe. They are coworker friends with visa issues, food preferences, similar language to bond over and have each other’s back but you are “just a coworker”. They are being really unprofessional.

Microsoft JoeMerlino OP Apr 26

Yeah I’m concerned about that. Man it’s really sad, I don’t have visa issues so I could be an asset. Partner for a business or something like that.

Meta naGC68 Apr 27

You are not an asset to Microsoft unfortunately (at lower levels). People who are stressed about visa are willing to put extra hours because if they get fired they have 60 days to sort things out. So they go above and beyond to keep management happy. Find a team that has good balance between {Indian, Chinese} and ROW

no, it’s not a secret

Haha fair point. What throws me off is that then they play nice, so my naive self believes it for a while.

Sucks. I am in the same boat. My Indian teammates do this. White boss ignores it. And I am Indian!
