I have been doing well at my SWE job but any conversation with manager is him being critical. He did an apples to oranges comparison for different solutions which shocked me bcz he is smart and is usually reasonable. I ended up feeling stupid which is not a new feeling. I have had positive feedback so far and was promoted 2 months ago. How should I take this? I am progressing in my career but i definitely feel stupid on a regular basis.#tech YOE : 4 TC: 170k #engineering #swe #software #software
Being inclusive as a manager is maybe the most important thing. People still write code, it’s not automated. The manager should want their team to feel motivated and inspired (you can also do this with fear/shaming, but that does not build for longevity) There are good managers out there, you should go find one. Also, software eng is about learning and feedback by design. Everyone needs to be ready to give and receive constructive feedback But making people feel small really is just a reflection of an insecure manager. Keep your head up, do the right thing, take credit for your work and good things will come.
thanks man!
Don't give so much power to your boss to have control over you intelligence or your mental health. If possible change your boss.
The biggest factor that concerns me is job security. I constantly feel that if I do something wrong I will be piped or fired. I am on a work Visa.
In my over decade of career, what I've realised is - work visa, getting piped, getting fired, getting below avg rating, etc all these are control and fear mongering factors to keep you in bad note. Over a period of time in tech career, almost everyone goes thru one or the other things. And the earlier you realise you have the control to pivot as you want, the better ull survive the storm. Wish someone told me this when I've started. Would have saved me so much anxiety and panic.
