https://www.cnbc.com/2024/05/01/google-cuts-hundreds-of-core-workers-moves-jobs-to-india-mexico.html RIP and best of luck to those affected Do you all think this will affect Google's functionality in any way, or any of it's working processes ? No change and simple replacement or will there be larger implications to this change?
Are these projects in maintenance mode or active development ? Hard to justify expensive resources for maintaining something
Is Sundar embarrassed by his recent moves as CEO? If I was him I would be fucking Embarassed. Remember when he swore that Google would never pay a dividend because Google is a growth company and focused on growth and then proceeded to fail to deliver any new products for an entire decade? His performance as CEO is an embarrassment. He took THE tech company. GOOGLE and collected hundreds of millions of dollars in pay every year and proceeded to bleed the world’s most recognizable prestigious tech company into the ground. Resorting to stock buybacks and dividends to prop up his stock compensation package now that he knows the end is near.
The assumption that new products and high skill talent is only available in Tier 1 US cities in baffling to me. Especially coming from the same set of people who advocate for work from anywhere policy. Pick a side guys. Your overlords are using your own tricks against you.
2 sides to this coin, why RTO if India is fine? If $ was not the issue, positions should be opened globally and the best candidate gets the job with same pay regardless of location If they restricted it some geo first then duh!
Its not individuals, complete teams are being move to low cost centres. Empire building by middle managers until now has restricted true global expansion of workforce. Now the greed of shareholders and execs has overtaken the greed of middle managers.
They're betting on AI bridging the gaps. Ai is just a force multiplier though. If you multiply intelligence that's great, multiply stupidity not so good.
This perspevtive hit me hard. I love the way you put this. 👌🏼👏🏼
AI can only do so much they’re assuming it’ll fix the communication issues probably, but even then the time difference and project wait times could extend not every country works like the US they actually take breaks in other countries
My best guess is that they're rushing to outsource in LCOL countries before orange man takes over again.
What's the difference between Indians in India and Indians in mountain view?
Indians in India unhappy with less money Indians in mountain view unhappy with slightly more money
So what’s going to happen to DEI there?
Folks this is economics 101
As the token white male on my team this move makes sense. Why deal with all the additional hassle of visas and costs, and lotteries, you could just hire directly from India for a fraction of the price, no reason to import them to the US to do the same job. This is better than visas for those who are on them because they can skip the BS and get directly hired. Why is blind of all places against this? It's mostly filled with people from India?
The answer to that: most of the Indians that make it over here are heavily filtered long before even getting to tech companies. Go to India to hire directly for talent and you'll be sifting through a lot of low quality coders to find that one good one: and he/she likely had dreams of moving to US.
Hiring bar doesn't need to get lowered, in fact they could even just have people from the US do the interviews. Dreams of coming to the US is hilarious, but I guess people can want what they want.
Send sundar back to india 1st
Not Sundar but his position and all the VPs - that in itself is biggest cost savings
That’s the plan. Google is India’s now. Larry page and Sergei are going to wake up poor one day and say wtf just happened
