Restaunts tipping in CA

Most people argue that tipping is REQUIRED as minimum wage laws do not apply to tipped workers - and that is completely false. The minimum wage for CA workers is $16/hr ($20 for fast-food restaurants), irrespective of tips. Teachers make $24/hr in the Bay Area. So let's say we wanna raise the wage for the restaurant service person to that range. It would mean adding another $8/hr via tips. However, in reality, they get much more in an hour from tips, as we all feel guilty about not giving that 20% tip. If they serve 4 tables per hour, all they need is $2 from each table to reach the same level of income as a teacher in the Bay Area.

I just tip so they don’t spit in the food.

So you are forced into it by fear. Generally, you pay (and tip) after eating, so how can they spit in the food beforehand? Unless, you are a regular.

A lot of places take payment before food, but I think there shouldn’t be any tipping at all even if they have to raise prices.
