Amazon ruined my mental health

I joined as a SDE 1 at Amazon. I was told to relocate to which I said no, my manager put new on 4 months focus, and I successfully got out of it. I changed team. In the new team, my manager was very new (L5 SDM). I didnt like his management style and expressed to my skip manager that I want to change team. Prior to having that conversation I ensured whether I am in focus or not, he said I am not. After I expressed to change team, he asked me for 24 hr time and in that 24 hr he put me on focus telling me “we cannot lose headcount at this point”. I am mentally stressed, depressed and having anxiety. The current market is so bad (in Canada) that even I am demotivated to prepare. I know he would pip me since he knows I dont want to stay in his team. So you do understand mental health at this point. What shall I do? I really need some help, I dont think I can take the mental burden anymore. Can anyone please give me some suggestions or refer me anywhere? I feel lost. Cant believe this is the dream company I always craved to be in. TC: 160k Location: Canada

😔

Why do you tell that before getting a verbal offer first from another team and applying there.

ex-RBC olaaaaaaah OP May 8

I told my skip manager that I got verbal offer from another team, and he asked for 24 hr time. In that 24 hr, he put me on focus. It was after getting the offer

This is learning, Never trust anyone in a chain, people do talk but they apply before the meeting ends.

Take short term disability leave.

Microsoft kolabearr May 8

There are provisions in companies that give you relief when you are mentally stressed an burnt out. Just get a doctors prescription, do the paper work and get the disability leave approved. It's a medical leave of absence and you chill out during that time and either return back or change jobs

ex-RBC olaaaaaaah OP May 8

Whats the benefit of that leave? It’s unpaid right?

go to therapist, discuss your mental state, dont be shy, its common in tech, take a short term health leave in US there is Short term disability , FMLA etc. i dont know what the equivalancy is in canada. Thatvshould buy you sometime to recover/recharge and make the next move.

Who asked you to be smart a** and go to skip. This is a very likely outcome in this case. Hope this is a lesson learned for you the hard way. Also, part of this is you who brought it on yourself. Amazon is not forcing you to work at gun point. PiP culture of Amazon is very well known.

What should have I done?

Silently look for another job and then quit once you have an offer. Complaing and whining to management or people team never results in a good outcome. I am saying this from my 25 years of exp in tech with 12+ companies.

OP would you recommend amazon as new grad in canada? Is it team dependent?

ex-RBC olaaaaaaah OP May 8

Its the overall company culture, rarely teams will not be like this. You gotta be very lucky

Ok. All the best. If you need someone to talk to, try inkblot. Used to work for them. Usually part of EAP.

If you got a verbal offer and skip put you in focus within 24 hours, you can definitely escalate to HR and prove this is retaliation. Unless you were already in focus

ex-RBC olaaaaaaah OP May 8

Fight the system? Again? I dont think it will help.

ex-RBC olaaaaaaah OP May 8

I talked to my skip manager trusting him, and this is what happened. How will I trust the HR will support me?

Try interviewing at Khalistan inc. I hear they are hiring big time in Canada.
