Are afterschool programs truly a horrible thing to do for your kids?

We are in Bay Area and our elementary have 2-3 providers to choose from however am reading all sort of horror stories online about those programs. I want to hear from Bay Area parents, did you do those programs for many years and were you happy about them? If any alternatives exist what are they?

What would you do if they don’t go to afterschool?

My older one loves her after school and thinks of it as play time. An onsite after school is a great way for your kid to meet and be friends with kids from lower/upper grades. They become more comfortable around new kids. What kind of horror stories did you hear?

Kids getting molested :(

There is a mix of kids by age(kinder-5th grade) and the kids are really close because they spend a lot of time together. If something fishy happens the older ones(5th graders) will notice and speak up. I am not saying it can't happen but a nanny at home or someone at daycare with 3-5 kids has better chances of getting away with it vs at after school with multiple teachers and older kids present.

We have onsite aftercare and the kids love it. It's mostly free play. They have great friends across grades because they play with these kids everyday
