Are tech workers as rich as they think we are?

Unless you hit a jack pot and sold your shares for 10m with 5m after tax. Ordinary coders are never rich. We think we are rich but we are really not. Stop comparing with average Joes you see working for minimum wage. Those are plebs and 80% of human are distributed that way. With this high inflation and high housing prices, it really doesn’t matter how much you make. 150k is the same as 700k. You are a always a comfortable middle class. And nothing more. You can’t do the things you really want to do. Your self fulfillment can just be a year end trip to some country you see from some random vlogger. You are too scared of losing your tc. And all you can pass down is your saving and education fund. Seriously if you don’t have asset that generates one million steady cash flow you are just a fatter rat in the nyc subway. You think you got the game. You are still nothing. Tc 700k with high earning wife.

I never think myself as rich. HHI ~600K, all of it was put into context when we were competing with 10 others who are making same or more as you for a 1.5 mil home in the VHCOL area.

'Feeling rich' is a stupid fantasy. As you get richer you simply have less problems that are directly linked to lack of money. I know some genuinely rich people - I'm talking $300MM+ NW running a company and on a day to day basis they have - a nice house with a yard, but nothing that stands out from the neighbours, a bunch of utilitarian cars - not one of them luxury, and having employees run around do all sorts of things for them to buy back their time. And that's it. Now there might be some trust fund baby instagrammers who are renting out yachts in dubai every weekend but no actual self-made rich person does that.
