EDIT: I had the details of the RSU vesting schedule wrong. See new post here: https://www.teamblind.com/us/s/Hc6hJMA6 At Google L4 SWE. 2 failed L5 promo attempts. Got an offer from Asana L5. Everything seems great except for the RSU vesting schedule: vesting doesn't start until after year 1, so I'd be taking a 115k pay cut until Sep. 20, 2025, after which I'd get a 51k bump. I think it's likely I could get L5 at Google by then. Asana L5 Base: 237k Equity: 166k (475k / 4 years, front loaded 35/30/20/15%, starts vesting quarterly Sep 2025) ESPP: 5k No bonus No 401k match TC: 242k yr 1, 408k yr 2 Google L4 (1.5 yrs L3, 3 yrs L4) Base: 186k Equity: 131k (vesting in 2024) Bonus: 28k (15%) 401k match: 12k No ESPP TC: 357K Asana wouldn't budge on a signing bonus to close the gap for year 1. Haven't asked Google to counter.
Honestly not worth it. What are the reasons for failed promotions? Also kind of shocked companies still are doing a 1-year cliff on equity grants.
1st time: land more impact, come up with a plan for x stalled project, think of the bigger picture 2nd time: influence other teams I felt I addressed the feedback from the first attempt (when I was told I was close) very well, so I was pretty upset to get different feedback the second time.
This is employers market , if you ask for counter , your manager will probably walk you out the same day.
One year RSU cliff is less an issue if you look at TC for first 13 months instead of exactly 12 months
It vests quarterly, so I'd get 41.5k in Sep '25, 41.k in Dec, etc. I would start in July, so I suppose if you upscale everything to 15 months it is a bit closer, but ultimately it'd take about 3 years to break even, barring raises on either side.
it’s just delayed, not lost. But do make sure you leave Google right after a vest to minimize loss there.
