Hey HW/chip folks , what do you see your career in the next 20 years? Do you think it’s worthwhile joining in 2024? I know you are really well paid lately but not sure if you’re also worried about layoff /outsourcing/job security/physical limits in general? TC:290 k
OP, what role for SEG? Front end (digital, mixed, analog) is the most secure job wise in the future. I worry DV, PD, STA will be eaten up by Gen AI. Physical limits? The vast majority of tape outs (not talking about Apple) is on trailing nodes so I wouldn’t worry about this. And with the chips act the cost of tape outs will keep dropping.
SoC DV at SEG. I see a trend of generative TB but not sure how risky it is towards DV.
20 years is crazy, if you are still working that long in tech you were getting shafted with compensation.
Don’t worry, if hw engineers won’t get jobs, nobody will… Layoff, outsourcing etc will continue to happen regardless
Isn’t Apple also relying more and more on service income. SW(not SW career) seems to be a more sustainable business than HW even to Apple as it scales better? I’m really genuinely asking as I actually got a chance to join Apple SEG and I’m still considering.
The example of Apple doesn’t mean SW is better for business in general. Big Tech is just trying to expand into more markets. As a result, you are seeing G/Meta/MSFT/Amzn foray into HW, while Apple moves to SW
