Hi google design folks, I saw design job opening that I want to apply. Do I get higher chance if I get referral from a designer or engineer from that team? How's the design process these days? Thanks

How it works at Google/Meta is you apply for a role but you are interviewed through a general process so your interviewers are people from different parts of the company. When you pass several rounds and the hiring committee proceeds with a “hire” then you match with a team, which is the hardest part. A lot of people get stuck in this phase. Also worth mentioning that Google posts roles internally first before they are posted externally (because it’s faster). Doesn’t matter who refers you but you can only refer people you know.
I’m not sure when you started, but this isn’t the case and hasn’t been the case for a year or two now. You interview with HM and most of the team these days, as TM happens before onsite. They changed the process so that there are fewer onsites that happen, but matching still takes forever. You can refer whomever you want. I’ve done it plenty for random people. It doesn’t matter, you just mark that you don’t really know them in the tool. Those types of referrals are meaningless though.
I joined last year and this was my process 🤷♂️
