The title says all. 10 years of software eng experience: always loved creating cool shit, writing code, and looked forward to start of the week. But last year and half took a toll on me: I’m tired, exhausted, and burnt out. There is a lot of tedious work, it is hell and extremely boring. I don’t want to do anything. I don’t want to talk to anyone. I just want to quit and take a break from the corporate world. But not sure if it’s a wise decision. YOE: 10 Total Comp: $320k NW: $2mil
Just do a masters degree with no thesis. Professional masters etc Chat gpt your assignments and do whatever you wanted to do You'll not only have a good time off, you'll also meet mew people and come out better than you were earlier
Hate those mba degrees.
Not MBA, ms
Same here and I'm from India. I personally feel i haven't saved much and that's the only reason im still working. But in this market I'm scared to take a break, coz I'm scared if i can return back to the market
I have the same fear if I’ll be able to get back with the current market conditions
Probably you all will be able to return but it will be hard
Fwiw your company really wanted me. I declined to take a year off from work. I reapplied. They ghost my application lol.
Same
You wouldn’t want to work here. My loss of interest started once I joined this company
Sabbatical?
You mean to take 12-month sabbatical(most likely unpaid) while being employed? This could be a good alternative. If company policy allows, I’ll do it. One downside is I can be the first one to get laid off :) but then again it doesn’t really matter.
Take it before anything happens.
I took a year off. It has been glorious. My only regret is not monitoring the job market. It took me a few months longer than I anticipated to find a new job. In retrospect, I should have started looking a few months earlier. I don’t regret taking the time off.
What did you do?
Explored my hobbies and passions (backpacking, fishing, woodworking), spent quality time with friends and family, traveled, etc.
Same net worth and have been wanting to do the same for a few years now and scared to quit due to the job market. What's your net worth breakdown? A good chunk of mine is from primary residence , hence, I still have to pay for a mortgage if I quit. I want to travel and do nothing for a while if I can actually commit to taking the break.
1.6mil is from two rental properties, both are mortgage. Rent covers it and utilities 300k is from regular investment account 100k is from savings account. I didnt include any retirement accounts into net worth calculation (IRA, Roth IRA, 401k)
That's awesome! Good job on the savings. Take a longer vacation/ sick days and see if that changes things a bit. If not. Take the time off. Sometimes, we just need a change of environment.
Do it.
