The literal plot is quite easy to understand. We went to war with AI. They won. But we scorched the skies to be clouded since they were solar powered machines. Which led them to need our bodies for body heat powered energy to keep going. They accomplished this by growing us in pods and keeping us in a dream world simulator so our bodies wouldn’t die. Hackers/software engineers are the ones that are able to be aware of this since they are in fact in a computer program. However freeing minds and “the one” are designed and are APART of the program (not originally but after several iterations/failures and losing crops - human crops - and changing operating Systems - the Merovingian to the oracle) machines discovered the human mind always eventually “liberates” themselves finding the architect (scene in part two where neo is in the room with the guy that looks like kernal sanders) and the architect gives “the one” the choice to choose some friends to keep “alive” and they reset the matrix and start over again. Neo refuses which makes him different later makes peace with the machines by returning the rogue program’s (mr smith’s) code back to the “source” (returns missing code back to the source code). And the rest is history. Worth mentioning some theorize mr smith is “the one”. I wont go into it here but youtube it if your interested its a decent take. The underlying message though: supposedly was about coming out as trans (which maybe or maybe not coincidentally the directors did come out as trans). A man or woman trapped in a false world where they want to be free’d and live in the “real world”. In the original script they even had some characters being men in “the real world” but when they “jacked” into the matrix they’d be women. The character “switch” (blonde woman with short hair in part one) was supposed to be one of these characters (hence the name) but they ended up removing that aspect. But there’s also a lot of parallels to christ and many other things as well. Great thing about (good) movies… there is no definitive interpretation - rather its left up to the audience. Also a lot of good easter eggs in the movie. Neo’s apartment # is 101 (binary). The book he keeps his pirated virus software he sells is a __hollowed out__ copy of the simulacra and simulation (funny its hollowed out because reading that particular book would have been useful for him 🤔) and they “debug” neo (like we debug programs … because he’s a program) in part one in the car before they free him. A lot more but check it out it out for yourself. Also it’s inspired by a great anime (amongst many other cool works of art) called Ghost in the Shell thats also really good. This is a super high level take on this movie but I’ll stop here because for sure nobody read this.
