What is a TikTok / ByteDance 3-1?
What is a TikTok / ByteDance 3-1 Software Engineer? It seems to be a FAANG L6 or M1. How hands-on must a 3-1 SWE be? Are they more of a people manager, or more of a lead engineer that pushes code most of the time and tries to manage people from time to time?

3-1 is tech lead level. I rarely see managers at 3-1 as TikTok is very flat. Most managers are 3-2 levels and have tons of people under them. As 3-1 you can expect 30% hands-on IC work + 70% technical road mapping, XFN collaboration, reporting, etc. 3-1 leads 3~10 people, but they technically do not report to you.
Not true bro. Many managers are 3-1. My skip is 3-1 and he manages 50 people. 3-1 is the requirement for being a manager. In this company, you need to reach 3-1 first, then you can be promoted to manager in the next perf. 3-1 could be tech lead or manager.
Not true. I was a manager and was 2-2 until I recently got promoted. Was a manager and 2-2 for almost 2 years
