Is the Chinese government storing information about US users via TikTok? Do you think TikTok is partly a PsyOp by the Chinese government to destabilize the US in some way?
No. I can guarantee you that. I work on data security, and I have at other companies. What I can say is this, from the most neutral standpoint. TikTok US Data Security treats US data as securely as US would treat government data. It is much more than any other social media platforms from America has done to protect user sensitive data. I am born and raised American.

How did you survive 3 years?
Will and passion for free speech.
TikTok is the only company where employees (even SWEs) are giving out referral codes, to an extent where it’s even on their LinkedIn bio. Why?
My opinion: Because people in US have a negative view that it’s a “Chinese spy app”, which is wrong. It’s an app that just became viral for what it does well, and has stuck around. Because it’s an app founded by Chinese founders, ByteDance has roots in Chinese work cultures. That doesn’t mean that they abide by them. They listen to US work cultures and adapt for them. That’s why it survives here and pays well. Sure, work is busy, but it’s busy for a reason. We break barriers, and I have a lot of respect for the Chinese engineers. They are brilliant, and work hard and innovate. Something that the West isn’t accustomed to.
The West isn’t used to? You realize just about every major innovative tech company is from the West, right?
This is a censorship ploy, not a security risk.
Exactly. Suppressing free speech. TikTok is a platform that spreads information quickly, and the US government currently cannot control that. So they want to ban it.
If it were a security risk, Meta would already be banned. There must be ways around this. Setting up a third party “independent” buyer for TikTok US to continue under a separate entity or rebrand its US subsidiary under a different name or sell to Meta with certain conditions of employment.

Well ignoring the trolls I think your dropping insightful thoughts. What are a few other positives and a few negatives for someone considering a career there from your perspective?
Thanks. Here are my positives: working on exciting work every day, despite the busy hours, I’m happy to wake up every day and open my laptop and dig in. It’s truly fascinating stuff. I really can say with all honesty, my colleagues are fantastic. No mini politicking and ladder grabbing. People here genuinely care about their craft and they also love to share and teach you. Something that I think is unique to this company. There are no barriers I have experienced when it comes to communication. Just last week, I dm’d the head of US Data Security, and she replied. That’s how transparent it is working here.
Negative: if you don’t have the time to work hours, then likely it will be a bad time. It’s a lot of work, I’m not going to lie. I don’t know how people with families do it, maybe I’m not cut out for it if I had a family. But it’s time consuming. It’s not for everyone.
What’s the algorithm bytedance talks about not selling? What is special about it that Meta/Snap can’t do the same thing?
Why should they sell it? If it's my algorithm and I made millions that will last for my lifetime. I would rather keep the algorithm to myself than sell to a US company that will use it to spy on their own citizens. Some people are not greedy as Americans.
Re-read my comment, I am asking what’s special about it that others can’t replicate.
How many hours do you spend on average on calls and chat after 5pm US time?
I’m basically oncall 24/7, once every two weeks. I spend a lot of my working days solving oncall problems. But I’m an anomaly. I’m the go to guy who knows the system well. And it’s not that bad. Or maybe I got used to it?
Chats after 5pm are normalized for me, it’s something to get used to. But I don’t have meetings after 5pm usually.
If I post a video of bashing at the Chinese government and at the Chinese emperor, will my video get posted ? Or will it get blocked ? Btw, I am an American and my videos are in English.
Trust me, you will not get blocked for that, unless you violate the general code of conduct on TikTok, which applies to all videos posted. I see videos bashing the CCP sometimes on my fyp. If it is in your interest, you will see it in your for you page.
I take my comment back. Plan to make it a separate post about it.
