Have any of you affected by layoffs decided to leave the tech industry and pursue another field? If so, could you explain what career path you moved toward, or if you decided to go back to college? #layoff #career
And age
I'm later stage career but here's what I did. After 23 yoe in tech I realized I wanted to help more people in their careers than the number of direct reports I could have. I sought out a career coach and came up with a plan to pivot to tech career coaching. I took a high paying leader role at Coinbase and saved every dollar. Eventually I took on clients and was ready to quit, but. I figured I would try asking for a voluntary layoff to get severance. I had a 1:1 meeting scheduled to bring it up with my boss, but they laid me off with 16 weeks severance two days before. Best day of the year. That was two years ago. I make 84% less now and I love what I do. I work 3 to 4 hours a day and I can pay my bills. I spend time on hobbies, projects, time with my kids before they go off to college. I'm basically Coast FI as this point and semi-retired. AMA
Honestly if you look at insurance plans they bare exorbitant and all garbage unless you want to pay over 20k a year per person for a good plan. This is almost impossible to afford if one wants to live a simple life and quit the rat race
I am early 40s and can in 5 6 years can stop working if I did not have to worry about health insurance
People who post like these are always non-SE. What is your role?
Your point?
Well just saying if your role is like TPM, recruiter, sourcer, etc, calling yourself in tech doesn’t really make you belong in tech. So leaving is a good idea. 🤷♀️
