I’m will finish my masters in AI in Germany this November and I’d like to come to the US to study phd. Any pointers on how to do that? Schools, programs, scholarships, grants? #h1b #2024H1B
GRE, recommendations, and ask your prof to give connections to the USA university.
+1 for using prof's connections
In the us basically all phd get a stipend. It’s not as good as a salary but good enough to live. You will get a teaching assistantship where you help professors teach or will get a research assistantship. Second one is more useful but also more competitive. If your advisor has grants they can fund through this. Universities also give grants as well. Don’t worry about funding if phd.
Many who get accepted for a PhD gets a stipend. But because you're basically applying for a job (TA or RA) they'll have an idea of what they're looking for. If the candidate brings their own funding (through grants) then it becomes much easier to just get accepted but there's no money for the candidate if something happens and they want someone else to pay for it. I've also seen people say "go first without funding and then get funding once you're there". This doesn't always work and if you're willing to gamble that then lol. Source: PhD
Receiving an admit is a challenge for PhD’s in US. Be sure to have lots of papers published and reach out to professor’s with your profile. It’s a completely different approach than masters in US. The professor mostly has an upper hand in admits for PhDs. Good luck.
If you already have papers, why do you need a PhD?? Lol If you have any papers at all, even 1 out of 100 authors, in an internationally recognizes journal and decent gre scored and a gpa you can be pretty much sure you will get admitted into PhD program.
Not Stanford, Berkeley, cmu, or mit
You are trying to get a phd degree but can’t do simple searches to figure out the very basic questions? My recommendation is don’t do it.
give him a break man... diff country, asking for opinions.. chill will ya?
Dude any professor would chill af when they saw OP can’t figure out the most basic questions. They’ll turn their sight onto other candidates.
You need solid publications to make it to a top school.
AI is hyped up like he'll and there is a oversupply of AI PhDs who cannot solve critical algorithmic problems. If you can get a Theory PHd with solid results with mathematical proofs AI is just a piece of cake. I think if you build solid CS Theory skills they are more durable than this fake AI hype.
There isn’t such a thing as PhD in AI
They have just rebranded. I did PhD OR and most of it was ML and RL back in 2012. 4 years later my school had a PhD in ML then DL and now AI . It’s just a program of CS+OR+Stats
Message a ton of professors that you want to do a PhD in their lab. If they agree and encourage you to apply, do so. Then in your application, mention that you talked with them and the project you're interested in. The committee will forward the application to that professor as one of the reviewers, and they will push the committee to accept you.
Also, start doing this now, or else it will be too late. The application cycle starts around the time you graduate.
