Read job description she is applying to and make sure she can talk in depth about each and every technology mentioned in Jd and has some experience doing research on her own (think CTF or bug bounties or pen testing engagements/projects), read security research blogs in the domain space to get understanding of what it takes to be a researcher. Research is highly specialized: IOT/ICS research is dealing with embedded hardware and rtos, AI Safety is dealing with LLms, Web research is dealing with web apis and backends of all sorts, network security research is dealing with packet captures, network security appliances and protocol specs, android/iOS/macOS research is dealing with the platform and knowing where the bugs are, hypervisor research is knowing esxi/kvm/hyperv internals, malware research is knowledge of (most often) windows malware, disassembly, sandboxing, and ntoskrnl.exe and ntdll.sys, financial fraud research is knowing everything about financial crime, CC fraud and all sorts of ways to scam and conduct wire and mail fraud, etc etc etc
