Offer evaluation for non-eng project manager role L3 OpenAI: $130k base $400k PPU over 4 years Stripe: $160k base 15% bonus $200k RSUs over 4 years Having a hard time deciding between the two offers. Leaning towards OpenAI but not loving the PPU structure #startup #tech #offer #openai #stripe
OpenAI coming in hot with their Poo Poo Units 💩
Can I have snap referral?
Those RSUs are basically cash in hand, and unless Stripe goes bankrupt, they will at least be worth something. Meanwhile the PPUs are dependent upon OpenAI making a profit. Stripe is a powerhouse and isn’t going anywhere. OpenAI is hot right now because of the AI hype train, but everything that they’re doing isn’t anything that isn’t also being accomplished by the open source community.
Thanks for sharing perspective, such sound judgements is a rare thing to spot
It’s not actually necessary for them to make any profit. It’s just a funky accounting trick to work around the fact that it’s a “non-profit”. They’re effectively just shares. They have secondary offerings to let you sell.
As Pax8 pointed out OpenAI is paper money, you wont be able to realize it until OpenAI achieves AGI which is sometime away. With Stripe you atleast get to sell in secondary market, Stripe has more chance to go public once rates come down
openai has liquidity events which does not require agi
The last i interviewed recruitor told me no such events are available, not sure if this is team based since i interviewed for eng roles
My concern with Open AI is that they're beyond peak hype. They have good ratings here on Blind, and they have a lot of ex-Stripes working there. So I imagine it's a good place to work. Arguably better than Stripe. But I think they're also at peak valuation and there is more downside in the future than upside. There are also questions about competition, moats, profitability etc. Stripe on the other hand, might be a bit more boring. But it has a solid business model, is profitable and successful and has a realistic FMV. And while they might not have a massive hype surrounding it, it also has less VC-funded competition. I feel like joining Open AI now is like joining Nvidia now. Sure, it's a great company but it's also clear that they're at peak valuation and competition is primed.
What’s the PPU structure?
OpenAI all the way. It’s the most interesting place to work right now IMO.
Stripe had their moment in the sun years ago and is in decline. OpenAI has more possible upside (but competition is heating up too). Congrats on getting out of Snap!
Stripe is doing great actually, just had a big spike in valuation. https://techcrunch.com/2024/02/28/fintech-giant-stripe-valuation-spikes-65b-employee-stock-sale/amp/
yeah they "spiked" from 95 billion to 65 billion.
