As i understand it, wider skis are better for clumpy ungroomed trails. And skinny skis are better for groomed trails and for when you want to do quick turns. But most days, you don’t know what is the condition of the trails. So how do you pick which type of skis to take to the resort ? Thanks
Most people get one for their level, what they like to do, and their region. Beginners tend to go skinnier because it’s easier to turn. People that like hard charging groomers get skinnier. People who like glades or park get something different. Ice coast goes skinnier vs Rockies. Etc. there are a lot of articles that will help.
Usually you do know the condition. The ski resorts will post a snow report at like 4AM. You look at this to know what conditions to expect. You can also call them ahead of time and ask… they are experts on the trail conditions.
95 underfoot seems to be the safe bet if you only have 1 set of skis in your quiver!
This is the correct answer for the the Bay Area. More specifically, 95ish.
Go in the middle to be safe. If you know you’d be on groomers, go narrow If you like to go out into uncharted territory, go wider
