Location: Seattle Experience: 15 years. 2 FAANG. Apple(3 yrs) and Amazon (3 years) MBA and MS in CS. Just had a recruiter call and he mentioned it is L5 for now. Reason for change. 1.Done with Amazon and this TCT concept. My 2025 is a huge cliff. 2. Get back to people management in the near future. I understand Google L5 doesn't offer this and it is not my first priority anyway Blind tax. 2024. 375k due to stock appreciation #pm #product #productmanager
At 15 YOE, no way
Yea at 15 YOE i feel like you should be targeting L6 if not L7.
No
Will depend on your priorities… with your cliff if Google can offer comparable or better package then you can think about it. Just know that internally L5 - L6 promotion is extremely tough right now…. So don’t count on that.
I see folks choosing "get an offer and then negotiate". Do they really uplevel after the interview? At least at Amazon, it is a full loop again if the candidate wants to be up leveled and it rarely happens
No, rarely, and not without additional interviews.
Google L5 is a decent option if you can get it. You don't have to worry about comp cliff, and you'll have better wlb and culture. Get the L5 offer, and you will have time to think during team match which could take forever. Keep looking for next level offers at other places too. You can't guarantee getting a Google offer.
Who said you dont have to worry about the comp cliff. I hit it this year with minimal refresh grants. I am in Cloud.
I would have an honest conversation with the manager about what the growth prospects are. I know someone who went from Amazon L5 to Google L4 and rose through the ranks rapidly.
Ex-amazon here. Amazon L6 PMT mostly gets Google L5. I don’t think it’s a downlevel, more like a parallel move. Your scope would be heavily reduced though.
Yeah not anymore. Amazon changed its comp bands and the bands are catching up with Meta and Google. It’s a lateral move these days. Also, going from owning multiple products at Amazon to owning a feature at Google is career suicide in the long run.
I call this BS. I am at Google now, there are few senior directors other top tech non faang companies recently joined as L6. Amazon L6 PMT is definitely not L6 at Google.
MBA and MS from Stanford / MIT level schools?
No. MBA from Top 10 though
What did you do at Apple? Product?
5 years ago yes, now no!
