Most of you keep deferring your happiness to impress mama/papa/auntie/uncle/cousins/friends. First I need to get good marks, go to prestigious university, get a prestigious job at FAANG, keep getting promoted, get higher TC, wife, children, big house in Bay area, etc. You're entire lives are based on trying to avoid shame, comparing against your peers, and trying to impress people who don't even spend 5 minutes thinking about you. When you're dead, no one will care about how fast you got promoted to director, or what your TC was, or how big your 70s shack was in the Bay area, no one cares. Start living life before its too late, do things because they are interesting and fun, not because you want more prestige. Arbitrary success goals you've made up in your mind are holding you back, trying to impress an invisible audience that doesn't care. Focusing on yourself is the root of depression, focus on helping others. You don't need to make high TC, or have a big house, or work in a FAANG or tech job, do what you want.
At Google while coasting, preaching comes naturally.
That's why I'm coasting, prioritizing happiness not the grind
All facts
This is true for so many people, especially in tech. They also value a partner's school and job prestige over a genuine connection, and end up miserable together. They don't develop any interests outside of what is deemed as prestigious. But hey, at least your life looks good to others, right? Sadly that mindset isn't changing anytime soon. It's the genuine and vulnerable people who are actually happy in life.
