Snowflake vs Meta
For infra/backend swe, would Snowflake or Meta be better for growth from senior to staff? Say in the next 2 years.
I've worked at both. If you're asking which one is easier to get promoted from senior to staff, I would probably say Meta. If you're asking which one will allow you to work on bigger scale backend systems and learn a lot more, I would again say Meta. If you're asking which one is more likely to double in value over the next two years, I would probably say Snowflake. If you're asking which one you can personally have a bigger impact in, I would again say Snowflake.
This is such a snowflake manager view on things at snowflake. The quarterly review system screws the heck out of you. Read everyone comments about the company and it burns the heck out of an engineer. Super political and no career progress whatsoever. It’s a monolith application with little to no impactful work like any other enterprise company.

snowflake will probably pay more (assuming similar stock growth). My snowflake offer two years ago was crazy.
Pay more? How do you know while you’re at Meta? Your initial offered TC is what you’re limited to. Our refreshers don’t stack up as Meta so your ceiling is fixed even if you perform a little above meeting expectations

Snow is a dying company.
Snowflake is your career terminus. 99% of our staff+ engineers are hired externally, many of which are from Meta. The leadership couldn’t care less about growing an IC. Meta is probably the only place that still allows their managers to game the system and promote people at an insane speed.
At Meta, promoted to E7 is even doable for normies. At Google or snowflake, it is a pipe dream
Snowflake is a shit show not because of the stock drop, but because of quarterly calibrations and lack of career growth. As an IC4 you will be racing with IC5s to show that you are performing at IC5 level while IC5's are trying to show they are worthy
This is not a very useful question. Promotion would depend on a ton of things. Company is not one of the important ones. You can ask, which company can grow “faster”. And use that as a proxy. But that is also too coarse grained.
