Lexus TX550h+ vs Rivian R1S

We are a growing family and looking for a 6/7 seater car. Currently own a ModelX( Refresh2022) and it is the worst car we have ever owned. Have a long commute so need a comfortable and safe car which is also a family hauler. ModelX seats are so bad that every commute is a pain in the butt (literally). The car has been serviced for warranty issues 3 times already and I do not want to keep it any longer. Put a deposit down for Lexus TX plug-in hybrid but then saw R1S today at an event in Santana Row and it seemed to have a very good build quality compared to my shitty Tesla. Now I’m confused as to which one to buy. Help me decide. Both cars are within budget.

Get the rivian

BrightDrop marginman Apr 21

Go for a Rivian test drive to confirm you like it. Model X is an absolute disaster of a car, so your instincts are correct…I have a Rivian and it is the best car I have ever owned hands down. Build quality is insanely good, and the software is pretty awesome as well and keeps getting better. Additional bonus that it’s not supporting an egotistical maniac.

Tell me about it. After this price cut disaster I’m going to lose 50% of the car’s value upon trading it in. Complete disaster. Never again.

Im not surprised they have depreciated that much. Objectively the build quality of them is on par with Mitsubishi which is a joke for a “luxury” brand. Rivian is very much a premium vehicle vs pure luxury (no massage seats, scent gimmicks, etc)- probably most comparable to a Land Rover defender in the gas world, although I would say comparably it is better in pretty much every way from the defender.

You want a commuter and are already seeing issues that are taking you in for servicing multiple times. While rivian is a great company they are untested. Go for the Lexus and drive it to the ground.

Google zar1 OP Apr 21

My concern exactly. I tried one electric car company and that has shaken my faith in electric cars in general

Microsoft salty🥜 Apr 22

Blind will like the rivian but I’d go for the Lexus. I chose an old people car and didn’t regret my choice. The TX while it’s a new car for Lexus the platform isn’t new for Toyota.

Love my r1s can’t recommend it enough. I compared it against model x and found it so much better in terms of space and comfort.

Are the seats comfy during a long journey? I tested it a bit and they seemed hard but can’t say for sure.

You will never have issues with a Toyota / Lexus. Also plug-in hybrids > all electric.

BrightDrop marginman Apr 21

Twice the amount of components that can break and need maintenance. You have an engine, electric motors, battery/charger, transfer case. On a raw performance basis and operating costs view, EVs are better. If you have serious range anxiety or then perhaps hybrids would make sense.

Intel wonderehy Apr 21

Hybrids do not break down more than gas only or EV vehicles. Whoever said that hasn't done their research

Tsla is garbage. Rivian is nice but survival of the company is in question. Lexus would be my pick.

Google zar1 OP Apr 21

Lexus is known for its legendary reliability. The TX plug-in has a V6 engine which is known for its reliabilty. Rare to find that in a Toyota lineup anymore.

Amazon miscreants Apr 22

“Has a V6” and “Has a legendary V6” are not the same just so we’re clear. Toyota makes some excellent V6 motors, but not ALL of them are great. The motors from the G3-G5 T4R are excellent, while the most recent Tacoma is subpar (especially the DI/PI setup). Although similar sized vehicles the motors are drastically different.

TX is still in its first year and I'd be wary of buying a first year model.

Google zar1 OP Apr 21

That is true

Lexus, no doubt. Tesla or rivian, range sucks

BrightDrop marginman Apr 22

I get 380 miles on my Rivian pretty consistently… that’s pretty amazing imo

Roku roku⬇️ Apr 22

You mean in ideal conditions?

Amazon fatIdiot Apr 22

Try losing some weight, will make the seats more comfortable for your fat ass :)
