I came across someone's profile recently, and despite their impressive background with a PhD in mathematics from a prestigious university, they haven't been able to secure a job. The only explanation I could think of is the possibility of age being a factor. It's disheartening to witness firsthand, as I've seen a family member face a similar situation where their resume is consistently overlooked. #techcareer #google #amazon #meta #apple #recruiting
Maybe it's also price? There are lots of jobs I can't interview for because they wouldn't pay my bills. Being older with a family to support or a high mortgage to pay sometimes reduces flexibility in terms of what roles you can actually apply for. Sure I could move to a lcol area but I'm not going to do that lightly.
Limited information but a low paying tech job is still better than no tech job.
It's really not. By that logic, if I don't find a job after looking for a month I might well spend 8 hours a day flipping burgers for minimum wage. Collect 1k/month even if my mortgage is 10k. Time is valuable. Job hunting can be a full time job in itself. Planning a major life change like moving to a lcol area takes time too, if it comes to it. Wasting time on a job that won't cover your bills is a really bad idea.
I am old and have hopped around every 2-4 years consistently so it isn’t universally true
How old?
Old enough to hop pal
There is no way someone has been looking for a job for 11 years. They are either lying, or they have been applying exclusively to jobs that they are not qualified for.
I know someone with a phd who has been looking for a *relevant* job for that long. Doesn't mean he has never had any job or income in that time.
A PhD is literally spending 4 years hyperfocusing on some obscure niche most people didn't even know existed. Of course it's hard to find a job *relevant* to that.
Maybe bad interview? What if he or she cannot solve FizzBuzz?
11 years and no job? I call BS. I’m older than most of you and there’s no way someone qualified would remain jobless that long. He is either not treating bring out of work as a full time effort, is applying for roles he is not qualified for, or is simply not good at interviewing or he’s just not a solid engineer.
Ageism is always real. When I was at ibm they laid off everyone above age 45. Most weren’t hired again for several years.
A PhD in math means nothing if you can’t solve problems on the job , can’t code or can’t communicate. I have seen many of these math PhD,s in my “prestigious” college who were talking to themselves while walking or would dress like bozos and were busying themselves with abstract theories almost always useless for a job.

Skill issue
Or if they have been consistently upskilling, then perhaps bad luck if they are overqualified and the existing folks interviewing them feel threatened. Anything’s possible.
Aegism is real in tech, but the fact that this person publicly published a comment like this should tell you something about their people skills.
Market is bad
Market is bad, tru but he has been trying for 11 years which also includes covid surge whefe there was a sudden demand and everyone was huring anybody
