Folks at Airbnb, what are the benefits other than the Airbnb credit for you to spend? Considering a move from Meta to Airbnb for similar TC? I joined Meta recently and don't like it here at all. Because it is a similar TC, I want to consider the non-comp related benefits compared to Meta. For people who moved from Airbnb to Meta, what are you missing? TC: 850K (stock inflated TC) #meta #airbnb #ex-airbnb #tech
Curious are you e6 and what do you not like at meta ? I’m Considering a move to meta .
yes, see above. I answered in the other reply. Make sure to join a team whose leadership is from a mature company. I joined a team that has in-house grown leaders (i.e. <35 years VP, directors, mostly chinese eng leaders, who are immature and in a close-nit community but bad for outsiders)
What’s your level at meta? L7?
Mind sharing the Airbnb level? IC? I am considering interviewing with them as well due to their remote friendly culture.
Isn't Airbnb full remote?
Yes, that is the policy, but I am trying to see beyond that.
Full *international* remote if I'm not mistaken
What is your offer? How ambitious are you for promotion?
Mind sharing the reason behind the second question?
@cy552 I think the reason behind the 2nd question is that G10->11 is probably not possible, hence this will stay as it is for the entire 4 year duration. @sje68 my offer is in the range of 800K with 8-10% growth due to equity stacking.
Benefits are generally the same but slightly worse in all aspects at Airbnb versus Meta. 401k match is worse (3% of base). Healthcare has slightly higher premiums and no EPO option, but slightly higher HSA match. No company perks like Fond. No survivor benefits other than life insurance, so goodbye to 10 years of salary or immediate vest of RSUs upon death. In terms of TC, Airbnb refreshers are generally higher but one thing to note that people don't realize. Individual performance multipliers at Airbnb only apply to refreshers and not yearly bonus. Yearly bonus is only multiplied by the company multiplier, which is generally much lower than at Meta. A 1.0 company multiplier is a good year and <1.0 happens quite a bit. Stock price also doesn't jump nearly as high as Meta so your overall TC might be lower. Overall though, culture at Airbnb is more relaxed and less stressful with better wlb, although it can be stressful if you work on launches.
Have you been at both in the ABNB->Meta order? How is your experience at Meta these days? Annual bonus is 25-30% of the base, which is negligible. The equity part, I hope to reach 1.5x, 2x if the promotion doesn't happen. "so goodbye to 10 years of salary or immediate vest of RSUs upon death." -> This is actually life-changing and substantial benefit for your family if tragedy hits. Good to note that!
This comment is pretty on points, Airbnb’s benefit is a little bit worse but still decent. I like HSA over EPO. And the life insurance, the premium for life insurance isn’t that high, so all these benefits you can consider some $ but it really isn’t that much. We don’t have 5 years recharge, that’s sad though.
Curious about TC, is $850k a TC is inflated TC due to META appreciation? How did you get an Airbnb offer that can match it? E6 offer nowadays is like $6xxK
@hg6099, it is inflated, but due to stacking equity refreshes, it would become the norm in the 3rd, 4th year. I just showed airbnb my w2 and outright said why should I move for less money. E6 offers at Meta are actually >700K these days for specialist team matches. I don't know about the G10 offers these days. Are you using "nowadays" as in it got weak due to the market or as in it has increased to $6xxK? How is life at Airbnb? Do you think wlb, reduced stress, easier perf cycles make up for the less upside of the abnb vs. meta?
I don’t know if it used to be higher, I was using nowadays as that’s what I’ve seen. Didn’t see offers exceeding 700K, so if you get it that’s great. WLB is great for me, it’s team dependent but I like my day to day life, I’m not rest and vest type of person, still put a good amount of effort on work, but I don’t hate my work, sometimes motivated. Perf cycle I probably won’t make assumption that it’s easier to get better rating in Airbnb, people here still great and you still need to know how to play the game, but we don’t pay that much attention on impact, like you ship something drive business, hmm you don’t get credit on that, you get credit on how you execute things and how hard it is unless it’s eng driven, maybe it’s healthier. Promotion to E6+ Airbnb is much harder than Meta. Team depends again here, you can easily find people hating Airbnb for bad wlb.
Tech stack: Kotlin, Java, Kubernets AWS PTO 15 days + 2 floating + 12 public holidays + 4 extra days around the public holidays + 7 days at end of year At 10 years you get a 4 week sabbatical Phased return to work after parental leave If you stay 4 years your PTO goes from 3 weeks to 4. Sick leave 5 days 401k 50% match Health insurance Anthem and Cigna. 20 Lyra sessions. Travel insurance Family and caregiving perks HSA contributions 1250 for employee, 2500 with dependent Perks 2k per year in credits, 75$/month for phone bill, 50$ /month work from home allowance, 350$/quarter live and work anywhere allowance (gym, attire, etc), random swag (backpacks, blanket). 1000$ for education per year for you or your dependents. ESPP: 15% discount Commuter benefits Pretax up to 315$/month Donation matching, volunteer time off and matching Culture is pretty good, engineers are well taken care of and pampered with all sorts of events in the office and twice a year team building events in person. Recommend you talk to potential peers to get a sense of how the team works and assess your future manager before deciding.
Live and work anywhere allowance is $150 (paycheck) + $350 reimbursement per quarter -> $2000 / year And there is $1000 education / year As you listed. I’m curious to learn what Meta has, can someone also lists? :)
I wish I got once chance to interview at Airbnb. Countless applications and 0 calls. 😞
What are you not liking at meta? Wlb?
Pretty immature leadership, crazy tech debt, extremely political (especially e6s are meant to play this game very well and steal scope/ownership during perf to sustain performance and eventually master the skillset to get to E7), which results in bad wlb.
