Do we even need H1Bs in tech anymore?

H1Bs in tech were needed after the dot com boom because there weren’t enough engineers. Now with the huge amount of layoffs in tech, there are a lot of people who are in the job market but unable to find a job. H1Bs are no longer used to get important talent, but it’s being used to get “cheaper” talent. Which wasn’t really the original purpose of this visa. Besides, with remote work being so good companies can just hire in India, instead of using up H1B and paying more for the same person to come here. Or that job could go to a laid off American instead. I hope Trump does something about this when he comes next term.

Yes we do, I still have full village of relatives I want to escort to here.

Sounds about right.

Racist post

Indeed baconburg OP Mar 14

So it’s racist to want an American citizen to get preference for a job compared to an immigrant who came on a visa for shortage of engineers?

Microsoft uguv Mar 14

You specifically targeted Indians by saying Rajesh (conveniently edited the post to remove that now). H1b has other nationalities as well.

I can see both sides of this argument. Honestly though, having them work in the US will make your wages higher. In America, this person gets paid $10. In their home country, they’ll do the exact same job for $3

that is not how it works Mr. Kunchabatlu Wages go higher for Telugu or Hyderabad who moves here, not for the American. Their wages go down because of cheap labor like you.

PayPal 6pfTvPNy Mar 14

I’m a natural-born American. You make a lot of assumptions. I don’t understand what you’re saying either.

Apple lolno Mar 14

I’m on h1b making $450k, how much cheaper am I compared to you?

eBay poi3u1 Mar 14

there is a difference between working not to be deported vs just working. Employers extract more work for each $.

Now, there is AI boom. Avg Joe won't make the cut. Fwiw, that's how it works. Citizens are given more preference. Many jobs do not sponsor visas these days.

Amazon bigstink69 Mar 14

I definitely agree we should only be hiring H1Bs when there’s genuinely no domestic talent to fill the positions, but companies don’t give a shit. Naturally, youll get a lot of push back on this post from people who are H1Bs but they’d be saying the same thing if roles were reversed (and so would we)

VMware LaBA02 Mar 14

Can pay these people 1/4 the amount from their home countries, no need to bring them here

Amazon TatyaVnchu Mar 14

If Americans studied and got degrees as much as people from other countries, you wouldn’t need h1b. But unfortunately thats not the case. You need h1b to run this country.

Amazon youpsi2.0 Mar 14

There have been 60k-80k CS graduates per year in the US for decades now .. just with Bachelor's degrees. There is far more supply than demand. Stop repeating lies from the 80s.

Microsoft good69 Mar 14

Yeah. And how many Indian grads are employable?

Apple old.monk4 Mar 14

I’m on H1B and get a TC of 550k with a net worth of 2.2M at the age of 30. What’s your TC and NW?

VMware LaBA02 Mar 14

You should not use this as justification for being here, it only results with you and people of similar background being figuratively or even literally targeted when social unrest rises.

Broadcom Ltd. dkbosedk Mar 14

OP specifically targeted people on h1b saying they were "cheaper". Why should old.monk4 not use their TC as justification for being here?

Walmart hawp38 Mar 14

No we don’t. Enough is enough. The system is abused by those people that you mentioned initially but they attacked you and called you racist while in their country they still marry based on some grouping method of their own people. If they do that to their own people what would they do with us. Tech is screwed and there is no culture anymore anywhere thanks to these people and their neighbor.

Amazon suck1t Mar 14

Tech is US literally exits because of smarter people coming in from H1B. Now go back to cleaning the floor, Walmart.

Bloomberg in-resus Mar 14

They don't marry "your" people. That's how far it goes. India is the most diverse country. You are putting them all as one Rajesh. In the US, interracial marriage is only a small percentage. That group is based on ethnicity, language, religious beliefs... the number of cross group marriages that are happening in India is much higher than you see in the US.
