Are generalist SDEs being phased out?
Joined meta last year , got meets all rating in December PSC , this half was rather slow in terms of team project plus all the speculations of layoffs , My manager asked me 3 months back to keep an eye on diff count and lines of code as that can be flagged by higher management during mid PSC We also got a new project so finally I had some substantial work , I worked my ass off during the last 2-3 months with diffs and lines of code in the top 3 of my team , I also did some good work in achieving milestones in the new project . The mid review was closed on 30th June I felt confident that at least I will get MEETS ALL, my manager dropped review , that is really really bad . Also some of my colleagues backstabbed highlighting only the things that went wrong in peer feedback. My manager literally mentioned I am performing way below my level .Not to mention my last few oncalls were hell with someone raising SEV almost Friday nights and I had to give up my weekends . I am worried that I might getl MEETS MOST. I feel really burnt out in a year , now I am planning to prepare n may be interview for Google . Any advice if google or faang review process is similarly competitive and toxic? Any advice how to deal better? Blind tax L4 Tc - 170k USD Inc stocks ( EU located)
Hi VMWare
Google morale and culture are both bad now. I don't think you should jump ship to Google.
How and why?
One should be more judicious in picking peer reviewers. No? Work on cultivating good relationships with key TLs to get good feedback
There's no mid cycle ratings so you won't get anything at all. Relax. Constructive peer feedback is good and expected for everyone. Take the feedback and grow. You are doing fine.
thanks
