First, I just want to thank the Blind community. Lots of entertaining crap but also lots of really great info and it really helped me get into this good situation and now I have a tough decision to make. Note: location is Canada and TC is in CAD. -- Current: 14 YOE director level (managing managers) at non-tech company. 5yrs management, 3yrs managing managers - TC 240k -- Offer 1: L6 SDM Amazon - TC 425k (what the recruiter gave initially, no negotiation or breakdown yet). Applied and interviewed for L7 SDM and got down-leveled. Pros: FAANG, much higher comp Cons: likely worse WLB, lower level responsibility -- Offer 2: Director level (managing managers) at digital arm of another non-tech org - TC 340k Pros: met leadership group and really liked them, probably better WLB, rated one of top places to work in my area Cons: much lower comp, not going to get FAANG name value on my resume -- Biggest concern for me is actually the down-level in responsibility, but it has been pretty tough to crack tier 1/2 orgs (applied to 8, interviewed for 2, only 1 offer). At this point, I'm leaning towards Amazon and getting a promotion quickly in 1-2yrs and being very transparent about it. And if I don't get promoted, I'll try moving on to another tier 1/2 org for L7/M2 level. Also, I am quite aware Amazon has a bad rep on Blind, but see previous paragraph. What would you do? #engineering #software #swe #amazon #sdmamazon
L6 EM too much of politics..
If you go to Amazon, spend money on whatever makes it bearable. Massages, ordering out, cleaning, etc.
Haha, funny you say that. My wife and I had that xact discussion and were looking at options to reduce time spent on food, cleaning etc.
do you have kids OP
Not sure if 85k is good enough for the downgrade. M1 is a BIG downgrade from M2. Like others said, it may take years.
I agree, hence my concern. I don't mind if I know it will be <2yrs, but that's really what I'm stuck on. It's not even the comp of L7 that I'm looking for, it's more the work. I'm more comfortable managing at a higher level/scope at this point, I'm not sure I want to get back to being single team focused.
Yes, and the amount of politics that you will have at M1 and the blood-bathing that occurs. Have to ask yourself if you are down for it. But I agree its a tough call.
Definitely Amazon. It’ll open even more doors in the future. That being said, L6 to L7 is a difficult promo. Expect it to take 3 years.
Thanks! Is it still hard to get promoted even though I already have 3 years experience managing managers? The feedback on my cycle was that I was borderline, although I know that could all just be BS.
Yes, it’s still difficult. They always tell people that. That people said, it is still possible to get promoted, especially if you perform well. Once you’re inside, very little of your past experience matters anymore. (I’m at AWS, but not an SWE. I am L6)
