1. We got really lucky both times. Found what we liked and really went for it (waived all contingencies, wrote a great letter, put in the best offer we could) and were lucky to only have to do this once each time.
Got the first one by paying 100k more than listed price

First time, third time was a charm. Second time, we were the only bidder. We knew it too, and got quite the deal.
10 house offers. I knew how much I wanted to pay and how much I didn't want to pay in each case. Took me long but didn't think I overpaid.
3 offers. One we were second highest and got countered but we chickened out. One we low balled because we didn't love it and we were one of the lowest bids. Our current place we lucked out as they listed during off season (winter) and had trouble selling. Got it for like 100k under list. My advice: ignore listing price, do your own comps and stick to your own research. Folks (even myself at first) got over obsessed over the listing price and paying over/under. Know what you are looking for and realistically what it SELLS for (not lists for) to get it in the current market and bid accordingly. Best of luck!
I think we put 2 offers before our 3rd offer was accepted. Second one we got counter but we felt it was not worth the price and the 3rd one we were one of 6-8 bidders and barely won out as second best time just 10k lower but ours was submitted before them. They did not increase their bid so we won. So do need a bit of luck as well
Our 2nd offer got accepted. On our first house/offer we got a counter offer. We knew what other party was offering (our relator found out and that turned out to be the truth) and we didn't want to pursue anymore, wasn't worth it for us.
6 offers
None, our first was accepted. We looked for like a year and then when we found what we wanted we really went for it.
So one offer lol
