Always sell on vest is a financially ruinous advice
I know a few people, husband and wife both L6 at Amazon, and others at similar or higher positions in tech. These couples easily earn $750k+ every year. Their lifestyle is good. Houses are big. Nice vaactions. Every few months I got a message about how one of them has bought yet another rental property. All of this while maintaining a healthy WLB. My wife doesn't work in tech. And, I don't think I can reach that TC without burning myself out, by working really really hard and hope to land a $1M+ in the next 5 years. I will have to give up on family time, affect my health, affect my marriage, etc. I feel like a loser all the time! I don't think I can ever compete with the tech couples. 😔 Thoughts? TC: 350k
Who said that you need to compete?
Why do you want to compete ? Be happy with what you have. See if you are improving from your current position thats all that matters.
If you are a tech couple and are dealing with the exact same job problems.. it can be a problem when at least 1 partner can not give some slack… if both are firing on all cylinders what happens when one of your kids needs you?
I’m in a tech couple and we only make 600k per year total
Are you happy like the OP states?
I’m in the Bay Area, so no
Well, how do you value your life and what true goals do you want to accomplish? If you aren't talking to a therapist, it's always a good thing to do and you can find the root of this mentality, especially if it is something you want to change. Don't forget, at your TC, you are making at least 7 full families' TC.
Cope. Reaching life goals faster is all OP wants.
Why compete? You don't need that much to be happy in life.
There is only a marginal increase in quality of life from $350K to $750K. You will live in the same city, one will have 1-2 more bedrooms than the other. You’ll go in the same vacations, one might fly first class and stay in a room that’s 100-200 more sqft. You will both have a Rolex, one will be DJ the other will be at least a Sub. Basically, unless you exit to an alternative investment fund or a high paying job in finance, you’re not gonna make the money to fly PJ on family vacays. You will be capped, as will the couple as well.
The main difference is that they have more money to invest in properties like rentals or in stock market. This shaves off years from the amount you will have to work. Material things are ok they’re not a big marginal increase in enjoyment. But the main difference is that if both are high earners they can retire early and reach life goals earlier.
The main difference is time and the opportunity to build wealth
I can confirm OP is a loser. Winners don't compete with other randos, only themselves.
If you competing with digits there's always bigger ones...
Be grateful for what you have and don't worry about it
