Got a staff position (they say only very qualified people get this as there are only a few staff within the startup.) This startup is around a couple billion dollar valuation (this was a few years ago at the market’s peak in 2021). The offered base is $240k (cali) and some stocks that equate to $120k per year. Currently at Google mid level (L4) with 6 yoe. Base is $190k and with stocks TC is around $430k. What should I do. Both same location
Startups will give you any inflated title that you want
Which role are you more interested in? Which one offers better growth? Decision shouldn’t be just around initial salary
Whats the startup?
L4 at Google > VP at most startups
If the company is giving Google L4 a Staff most definitely other Staffs are not worth either. Or there’s some serious thing going on there that they’re willing to up level you that fast. Lastly maybe you are seriously under leveled. Any case it’s not going to be a great outcome.
Theyre trying to get you to take less money and giving you some imaginary important sounding position as if that makes up the difference. If you are L4 and mapping to staff at their company, what qualifications do you think an L4 at their company has?
I would stick with Google here. Like others have said, titles at startups don’t mean anything and will almost always result in a downlevel or same level if you decide to go back to FAANG. Google is still a solid company even with all of the FUD. Take the safer bet and have fun. Best of luck! TC: 105K
Doesn’t seem like a tough one unless you really think the start up could pop. Google all the way
How much do you believe in the startup? If you think they're the next faang, it is worth it. If you don't, or they need to be the next faang just for you to barely come out ahead, it isn't worth it. Remember to consider non-monetary factors too like wlb.
2B at peak means atleast 50% discount currently , if your company doesn’t have FCF. Stick to google IMHO
