We are in NYC living in a luxury condo building with doorman. We are relocating to south bay area soon for my new job in Mountain View. I found a really nice home in north Palo Alto between Embarcadero and oregon express way. My wife did not want to move out of nyc but itās our only option. The idea of moving from a doorman condo building to single family home makes my wife nervous. Almost paranoid. She is worried about break-ins and burglars. Do people living in Palo Alto worry about crimes? I know there has been increase in crime rate but is relatively safe area in the bay area. Do people install security systems (if so, what kind?) when living in single family homes? What if we are traveling for long time and the house is empty- do we need to worry about it?I drive MB gle 53 amg. Is this car too flashy and gets targeted by burglars? We are both from east asia and lived in doorman buildings our whole lives. Iāve been to bay area many times and the single family home life does not scare me at all, but my wife seems to be paranoid about it. The house is at Camel Drive in North Palo Alto. I have not lived in Bay Area so I donāt know how to answer things she is worrying about. We are also considering moving to SF just because there are nice doorman building. #bayarea Current TC: 150k New TC: 400K
TC boss
Boss how do you live in a LUX condo in NYC on a 150k TC? I mean how is this possible??
Palo Alto is for rich people. Tim Cook and Mark Zuckerberg live there. Youāll be alright, homie!
But the crime rate seems higher than other areas like Mountain View, Cupertino, Saratoga, etc.
Could be because thereās a college campus and shopping areas that other cities nearby donāt have. Attract a lot of people and probably some petty crime. But itās nothing like crime in NYC!
Get an apartment/condo in an gated community. It would be more expensive than single family homes but much better. Also download neighbors app by ring. You can see most of the reported theft are mail/package stolen from single family homes.
Itās difficult to find gated community in zillow. Where are they?
These sites are not perfect but I remember apartments.com has gated filter. Try using that. Basically any apartment buildings with atleast 50 apartments would have it. It's just a random guess on the number. The apartments here have swimming pool, Jacuzzi, game rooms, business centers to use, and entry using a rfid based fob. It's not that bad here, but there have been some incidents recently. So be careful when you are in downtown of any city.
Itās one of the richest enclaves in the world. Youāll be fine. Have a security system or Ring if you want some security. Iāve lived in the ghetto of Baltimore and it really isnāt that bad. You just need to be aware of your surroundings and reduce risk.
Grew up in Palo Alto. I actually have a friend that grew up right at Camel Drive lol. I think there was a robbery like 10 years ago. You'll be fine...
Although, maybe people like your wife shouldn't move in if they feel that way. Most people want active community members, not someone who prefers to be locked away in a closed complex. Palo Alto is nothing like nyc
Do I need to worry about how the neighbors think of us too? āMost people want active community membersā like who? She is moving to a new area that she never lived before and the lifestyle from nyc to bay is completely different. I cannot say no to 2x+ tc bump so we have to move lol
Troll alert šØ Seriously š wtf
Get a concealed carry permit
Blind at it's peak. 200K people poor. Living in Palo Alto risky. What's next? White House is unsafe for Blinders? Not to be rude but dude, Palo Alto is like a premium area of Bay Area!
You know it if you know the area but someone who never lived there and see crime rate on internet would get confused š¤·āāļø
I agree ā¦ the thing is the crime rate is scary. Not the OP, but i am from a suburb of nyc and our crime index in my area is 91 (and pretty much all surrounding towns are 91 to the 95 rangeā¦ with crime being someone trying to break in a carā¦ like literally people leave their cars open with the keys in car). So going to Palo Alto where crime index shows to be 15, thats a shocker! Yeah so east palo alto may be to blame, but holy crap, its like the area is right next door. Bay area folks havent seen what a truly safe suburb is like and hence a 15 index is no biggie for them.
