I have received an offer 2 weeks ago from Microsoft, I wanted to negotiate so I sent the recruiter my counter offer which was 35% more but I only asked a portion increase in my stock awards. She said she tries but she doesn't guarantee and I agreed. She called few days later and said if she gets my proposed number I will join and I confirmed. Manager of the team sent me a congratulations message too and checked if I am accepting. I did reject my counter offer at this point as it had a strict deadline 3 days after recruiter called to tell me my position is no longer available due to reorg and elimination of headcount! That simple, I lost two offers in one night. ( earlier in the process declined another one as I really liked MS position.) Now I saw the position is posted in MS website again What is your take? Did I lose the opportunity because I tried to negotiate ? It is really hurting me as I lost my other offers due to this situation #tech #microsoft
This market isn’t particularly helpful in negotiating bud especially when there’s more candidates just ready to accept anything.
This . Expecting a courtesy from recruiters or employers wasn't a thing before the pandemic and definitely isn't one now. Especially now that it's a bloodbath out there.
35% over?!?
Have you tried asking the first company that you rejected? The general practice is to get an extension on the offer deadline till you have an accepted/signed offer from other company
I did They aaid we extended that offer to the next candidate already
You never ever negotiate with Microsoft on the pay and if you do then not 35% more lol
I didn't ask for 35%. I only asked my stock to be increased from 200k to 300k for 4 years
That’s a 50% increase in stock comp…
your writing is unclear (dunno if that swayed them). You said you would accept if she got the number you wanted, and then you still declined it? When you agree to that, it means there isn’t a need for a deadline; it means getting the offer is automatic acceptance. They might be imagining you on the job having miscommunications like this…
No she never rejected or accepted my numbers, she rescinded my offer in response to negotiations
take it at face value, reorgs have happened at all the big co’s and candidates in the middle of negotiations or even after accepting the offer have gotten screwed.
Negotiating has higher risk of reneging these days.
As others are pointing out, you need to take what you can get these days and probably not even bother negotiating. Understand the market we're in right now - so many people were laid off by these asshole companies so it's flooded and employers are going to take advantage of that. Since you managed to get these offers in the first place, you're probably fine and just need to do your next application with this in mind. Also, don't forget how poorly employers are treating you now. Eventually the pendulum will swing the other way, so while you'll have to take what you can get now, in the future be sure to treat employers the same way, be ready to bail as soon as you find something better and have absolutely zero loyalty to any company going forward.
They simply found another candidate willing to join at a lower TC.
They at least could tell me this is last number and I would decide
Did you not tell the recruiter your expectations before the interview process ? Microsoft publishes its base pay ranges anyway. In this tough market countering for 35% must have been a red flag for them.
