Received IC3 offer from roblox for ROS org. How is the org and the culture at Roblox? I've read it's pretty toxic, but can anyone shed some light on that. Any room for improvement for the offer? Offer is for San Mateo, CA office Edit: sounds like everyone is saying to stay away. I'll decline the offer. Thank you all!
ROS is a joke. Stay at Google and don't even think twice.
Any reason why? All I know is it's a pretty newish org
It might sound like the team behind their OS. But it isn’t. It is the team that works on their internal HR software. I interviewed with them a while back thinking that but didn’t accept the offer because it wasn’t something I was interested in. Ask them more questions about what the day to day job will be and then decide.
Damn, I thought Roblox was a top paying company?
It is a group full of underperformers forced to build useless internal dashboards for attendance tracking, calendar integration, employee profiles. It will be the first to get chopped in the impending layoffs. Even otherwise Roblox is a very poorly run nepotistic family business. Stay away
I don’t think it ever would get laid off, it’s a pet project
It’s bad. I’d stay away
I am very confused at why you would even consider Roblox. You've read about the toxicity, and you obviously see no one is contradicting you, so we won't belabor that. But in the end, it's a lateral move to a worse company for a worse job function with far less stability and no path to career and personal growth, and limited opportunities to transfer. One company epitomizes tech, with strong presence in AI, OS's, mobile, search, etc. The other company exploits children who can't afford a game consoles into buying silly digital hats. With Roblox's lack of growth (see stock), California taxes taking away half your raise, COL increase taking a good chunk of the rest, compared to Google's potential upside, it will most likely be a net negative, financial wise. I had a choice a few years ago, Roblox IC5 or Google L6. I stupidly chose Roblox. Don't be like me.
Tell me more about roblox, did you make decent money? How is the culture internally? Why did you leave Roblox? How is the performance evaluation process?
I left because I reported discrimination and was retaliated against. Don't take my word on it. Read the Bloomberg news expose on Roblox's discrimination. Initial offer was 10% more than Google's, same as Meta. If I took either of those other offers, I would be making more I think at Meta or Google. Performance evaluation is all politics. Is your boss a good buddy? Did you work previously at the same company and that's how you know each other? It's not merit based. Culture is org dependent. Only join the Creator and Engine orgs - they are Dave's pet projects. But the simple fact that they are hiring you to write software to track employee attendance (seriously, that's one of the org's function) should tell you all you need to know about the culture.
This seems below band for IC3 - either they’ve reduced the band lately or they’re paying less for ROS. I haven’t really experienced the toxicity that other people are talking about, and overall I’m pretty content here. But ROS is absolutely a stupid product, a dead end role, and likely item #1 on the chopping block if we were to do layoffs, so based on that I would avoid.
What org are you currently on? I might consider other orgs within Roblox. Can I transfer my interview results to other roles?
Would have picked Roblox if it were a non-ROS team. IMO ROS is nothing exciting to be working on.
You'll hear a lot of negativity on Blind because that's how Blind is, but I really enjoy working at Roblox right now. I would definitely choose it over Google. There is a lot more room to make impact (and less danger of layoffs) because of how few employees there are. However, like all companies, your experience will vary depending on your relationship with your team and manager. ROS is a very useful product and lightyears better than what we had before. It's also pretty new (only a couple years old) so there is a lot of room to build meaningful, 0-to-1 product features. I can also vouch for the director in charge of ROS. I do not work on ROS directly, but every time I have spoken to the director, he has been kind, helpful, and approachable. He's made a big difference and thanks to him, Roblox is a better place to work.
$285k in Kirkland is good.
