OpenAI vs Roblox

I received an offer from openAI and have a lot of trouble deciding whether I should take it. Genuinely seeking opinions. Yoe: 12 Roblox: - current tc 650k (350k base, 300k equity all liquid) - current manager is not very competent. Have to do some grunt work - wlb is good, 30-35hours a week OpenAI - tc offered 900k (300k base, 600k illiquid equity, can’t cash out for at least 2 years due to holding requirement, after 2 years might be able to cash out a portion of the vesting) - interesting work. But a lot of work. Everyone looks overworked and slightly insecure. Anticipating 50-60 hours/ week I know that a lot of ppl will say this totally depends on what I want: stability or risk. But I honestly don’t know the answer to this question. Current net worth is 1.2 m not enough to retire and I might be bitter if openAI equity does not hold its value. If you are in my situation, what do you think you will value?###

Try negotiating more at oai. I know they might have tons of applicants but its really tough to get the best fitting candidate at early stage of the startup. So if you have cleared the rounds you might have some leverage.

Robinhood botka Mar 8

They have a strict no negotiation policy.

It's already 900k, only thing more they can offer is a private jet

Hand me your open ai offer. You could even keep 20 percent of the TC. So many of us would just love to work there and learn all that.

OpenAI would give the opportunity to grow and is better in terms of networking and company reputation.

How does OpenAI interview look like? Is it similar to google?

OpenAI yggrg Mar 11

For me, it was very different. Google's interviews are relaxed and fun and more design-oriented. OpenAI interviews are much less relaxed and more code-focused

DM’ed you.

I’d say you’re still at the age where you can take risks. But that’s really up to you, and also consider how much you really like your current position and team.

Why did you even interview if you are unsure about moving to OpenAI

Roblox sOEs56 OP Mar 7

Recruiter reached out initially. It wasn’t easy to simply say no to interview. They are the fastest growing company right now

How was the interview at openai?

Roblox sOEs56 OP Mar 7

Extremely long and hard

Amazon dp[i][j] Mar 7

I get that a lot

@op what do you work on in ur current role? Whats your experience into? Are you a mle?

Roblox sOEs56 OP Mar 7

I think most ppl have no problem choosing openAI if they are giving advice to a friend. It’s hard to actually choose it yourself when needing to cut liquid cash by 350k a year.

Then that probably speaks volumes to you not wanting to take risks, when you said you didn’t care about risk. Just say you’re too puss, which is fine.

Do you have a partner who is employed? Those of us who would take the risk are DINK.
