TC: 92K YOE: 3 Context: When I interviewed at Tech co’s recently, I was being offered $140k base plus bonus/equity. I didn’t get the offers tho and got ghosted, or the position was no longer being hired for. I’m a manager at my current job now, and I’m thinking if I stick it out and wait for lay offs to die down, I can rejoin tech in a year or so and make more $$ than the $135k limit I’m being offered now. Issues/positives I am already having at my current job: CONS: 1. Job’s insurance premiums are expensive and won’t cover my therapist. I have to pay over $2,000 out of pocket before even a percentage is covered. At previous companies I paid $20 per session vs. $127 now. 2. I am working in a position different than what I interviewed for. During my final interview, they switched the role I was interviewing for. I took it bc I had no choice. 3. Environment is petty. It’s a small company with only one HR person, and my current manager is rather disorganized and catty, frequently talking poorly about other co workers in front of groups of people. 4. It’s been going on two months, and the only work I’ve done is busy work, 1000+ rows of excel sorting type projects. Due to my managers disorganization, a simple excel project has had to be started over 5-6 times, which is draining due to the tedious nature of 1000’s of excel rows. PROS: 1. I’m employed 2. Small company, maybe would be easier to be a promotion? 3. Unlimited PTO 4. Will learn a good amount of skills in this role if I stick it out. However, I’m not too interested in the work, and initially had applied for a different role. They did a bait and switch last round of interview, and I had to take it bc no other offers due to volition tech space. 5. I’m a first time manager, so integrating into that role at a smaller org might be easier than a large tech co. #tech #tiktok #google #salesforce #amazon #layoffs
I’d definitely be looking at least casually in your situation. Best of luck bro
What position at TikTok to get laid off? I thought TikTok was aggressively hiring.
Was going to ask the same thing. Did you really get PIPed instead? Nothing to be embarrassed about given how ridiculous the 996 culture is there.
What was your compensation at TikTok? Don’t apply to other places now. The competition is insane with all the laid off SWEs
I’m in sales so not an SWE but still insane competition. This is why I’m weighing pros and cons of sticking out this job I don’t really like due to being paid
It never hurts to interview as long as you have the time. I always learn things from interviewing with different companies. Sometimes it gives me a better idea what I need to focus on my current job! Ask the right questions and sometimes you will learn a lot and know about the industry. Try not to stress yourself out. I would interview one company at a time. If your end goal is not getting the job, you won't be stressed out and can focus on discovering and learning.
You've only listed cons of your current job. Based on this any reasonable person would say yes. Tell us what the pros of you're current situation are so we can help
Good point, updated.
