I am a centrist leaning left on social issues and right on economic. For the past few months I have read few books with conservative views and have been following Fox News. One thing that I noticed is that many white conservative men believe that they are being attacked and oppressed; that they are the victims; that the system is stacked against system. Genuine question: why do white conservative men feel like that when they control presidency, house, senate, Supreme Court, majority of local municipalities, majority of company boards, etc. ? To me it looks like the system was stacked for them for a very long time and now when some people are trying to make it more equal to others, they fight back. But it is selfish.
I think you mix race and ideology. The conservative views are widely opressed in mainstream media outlets.
I did mix two and it is bit confusing, but in my mind conservative agenda has been defined by mostly white men, so they are connected
As the country is founded mostly by white men. I think it is a history and heritage thing. But more importantly, conservativism is defined by ideas. there are many white liberals and also a lot of conservative minorities. Look at the 2016 presendential candidates, many of them are minorities.
True snowflakes :)
Libertarian here. I'm tired of my race and gender ("white" and male) being openly shamed by speakers at corporate events, news stories, forums...etc. I'm all for ending racism, but when the minorities we're fighting for turn around and pull the same racist crap... It makes me want to switch my vote to Trump. Apparently everyone is just inherently racist, and guess what, I didn't choose to be white, so fuck all of you racists, I'm done going out of my way for you.
I understand your frustration, but I believe the better option as a human is to recognize that at the moment some groups of people are less equal and help them out a bit in the short term. To make the playing field bit more equal. I believe it is better than getting angry at someone who is trying to fix the existing issue
Are you being serious? The ones most people worry are the Nazi fan boys and racists. No one after random while male which still top of food chain for almost everything in America https://i.pinimg.com/736x/62/d1/47/62d1476fd1dbdb546f2aa7c4e278c4fa--simpsons-funny-simpsons-quotes.jpg
Because they are.
What does being white have to do with conservatism? I don't know if victims is the right word, but it's alarming how conservative voice is being shut out. Also plenty of black, brown, other people consider themselves to be conservative as well. The media is a liberal mouthpiece and labels conservatives as racists, anti-women, bigots. George Bush was a racist. George HW Bush was a racist. So was McCain. Mitt Romney was a racist and a misogynist. Trump is the same as Hitler himself. Some asshole on CNN yesterday had the nerve to say Trump was a white supremacist. I do think there is an attack on white/Europeans in this country, particularly men, that would not be tolerated against any other group. The system was stacked for sure. Slavery was/is awful. But attacking today's generation for the mistakes of older generations doesn't seem right to me. It's counter productive.
I'm not male or white.. but i can see how they would be annoyed. Collectively being accuse of being sexist or racist all the time, getting discredited for their achievements...nobody would like that. It's as if no one has the right to question the radical left's background logic, because if you did, you would see how incoherent it is. I was democratic for most of my life, but now I refuse to choose among such polarizing and extreme groups that would never represent me....however I must say that the conservatives are making more sense right now. Every race/culture/country has racist people, and dare I say treat different people much worse... So why do white people get all the credit(blame) in Western media?
☝️
I'm white. When white men get 6 mos probation for rape and a PoC gets hard time they should just suck it up? Let's agree Nazis are bad. Not 'but...' Let's all agree WHITE racism is a problem and try to solve for it. Then you can move to your buts. Who in the white world is being discredited for their achievements?
This is the reaction by low status men to the message that they're complicit in a society that puts up barriers for minorities. They see that many others have it better than them, and so they don't see how they benefit and think it's part of a big conspiracy
I think alot of immigrants from other countries such as India, Vietnam, Korea, China.. Come here with literally nothing, have uneducated parents and no connections or assets... But they are able to rise to middle class or more within one generation... Despite affirmative action, racism, and cultural differences ( even if they are akward and not charming at all) all this going against them.... So I don't really believe in "white privilege". I say this as an immigrant who grew up sleeping on the floor, but now live a "privilege" life...that effort has alot to do with it. Hard work, patience, being prepared when the opportunity comes, and being a likeable, humble person is really all it takes to succeed. Unless people just want fancy things, loads of money and influence handed to them because they feel entitled, then that's their problem....not the taxpayers.
And the xenophobias want to take away your job according to US demograph AA.
....Not really. Most right wingers aren't worried about legal immigrants. But yea there must be a a few real xenophobias somewhere in this country. But what does that have to do with white people or conservatives?
As someone who is anti-Trump, he did say one thing during yesterday's press conference that I very much agree with. One way of easing racial tensions is jobs. I think you'll always have your Richard Spencer's and David Duke's of the world whose life mission is an all white state. Otherwise, I think many (most?) of the white male resentment is rooted in the polarization of society. That is, the gulf between the haves and have nots. I think the minorities are able to deal with being in the have nots better than whites because many come here from lesser circumstances. But whites see other as getting special treatment and feel like they're at a disadvantage. Their assumption is that without affirmative action / diversity programs, people would then be judged equally and on merit alone. Go to any urban city / higher institution and what does the face of success look like? There's a certain salience around people of color and women. Asians make up single digit % of the US population but are nearing 50% at places like UCLA. My parent were working class and we climbed out. But your average working class family today has a much harder time moving up. Women are going to college at greater numbers than males. It's not surprising than whites feel under attack. But I think that it represents an ignorant position and it's easy to blame everyone else for their personal shortcomings.
Lol at "jobs". Jobs won't convince white supremacists to stop campaigning for their own "white nation". Also if so many of these people are unemployed where exactly are they getting the money for 1) Road trips to cities that DEFINITELY don't want them there? 2) the many many guns they walk around with? I think you'd be surprised how many white supremacists are fully employed. I mean there's definitely some of them here on Blind.
White men have the lowest unemployment rate in the country (maybe not true Asians?). I wonder what white men would do if their unemployment rate approached that of blacks.
Your type of thinking is exactly the problem. The political leadership of our country is mostly white, but that doesn't mean that everything is just and fair towards white males in our culture and workplaces and the like. "Trying to make it more equal" sometimes results in swinging the pendulum too far and discriminating against people (e.g., affirmative action). I really think this is a reaction to the left's identity politics and how sick people are of groups like BLM and ANTIFA. People can't even have conservative views or speakers at universities anymore without fear of being attacked by communists. This has gone too far.
But again the argument that I am making is that the negative reaction to affirmative action is a selfish goal to maintain the positively stacked system for white conservative men. The way I look at it is that they are resisting the idea to make the society more equal for non whites and females. And that's selfish
Covfefe, literally the only industry women aren't earning more than men in is tech:. The problem is the 80% myth is an unassailable "fact": http://content.time.com/time/business/article/0,8599,2015274,00.html
