Coupang culture?
My friend was recently PIPed and pushed out of her compny last week. In trying to comfort her, it brought a lot of old memories/trauma where I had gotten PIPed 2 years into my job right out of college. I got promoted 1.5 years in and moved to a new team where unfortunatley I had a bad apple of a manager who only saw the negativie in me and never my strengths. I was put on a PIP for 3 months and after burning the midnight oil and meeting new expectations, they told me they would extend the PIP another 3 months just to make sure i was consistent with results so 6 months of stess/anxiety. Long story short, I was able to line up a job (albeit 25% pay cut) and accepted it during my last week on PIP at my previous employer knowing I was soon getting shown the door. i have since done really well and gotten promoted at my new company. its been almost 3 years since I was at my former employer/ PIPed for 6 months and eventually pushed out yet still continues to haunt me and make me feek like an imposter. how can i help my friend kmow she will get through it when ite still so hard for me? has this ever happened to you and what have you done to move past? #piped #pip #fired #movingon
I’ve been on the other side of the table several times (not at current company). I’ve realized that a PIP is more about the environment than the individual. You can’t take it personally and shouldn’t think that you are just the type of person who underperforms. That said, you risk being PIP’ed for things outside of your control at every job. You need to learn to live without the existential fear of losing your job. There are many worse things that could happen
Ugh I try so hard to remind myself this. How can you not take it personally when it’s directly correlated with you and your performance?
I have seen several engineers shown the door who I truly believe were smarter than me. IQ, motivation, experience, etc are all things that contribute to success in a role, but sometimes you simply can’t translate those things into what your company wants. It hurts to be fired but you need to learn from it and move on. People far more talented than me have been fired so I’ve adopted the mindset that I’m never safe and learned to accept it
It is so thoughtful of you to support your friend. Unfortunately I do not have an answer for you as I went through a similar experience years ago and it still haunts me. I was not piped; I actually got to leave the team but my mgr made my life imposible. He/she saw only the negative and stole my projects. Because of this I had evidence to support that I was doing a good job but he/she didn’t like me. I started taking therapy a year ago and it has definitely helped me but I still feel insecure in some aspects of my job.
At amazon? What was your role?
Yes, of course at Amazon. My role is non tech. For the last two years I have gotten TT and I moved to a people management role. Still these memories hurt me. I try to do the best for the people I manage and always remember what is to be in other side.

A job is just a job, why let it control your emotion?
This^^ My mind is playing tricks on me
Income that you may not get elsewhere
Setting aside 6-9 months of emergency funds in a savings account that will remain untouched unless you lose your job or need to cover another emergency will do wonders for your fear of losing job. Yes you can make more in the market, you can also be down at a time that you desperately need the money and take a loss. $25k-$40k for peace of mind is a worth it in my book.
Yeah, sometimes I wonder how can ppl not have emergency fund or savings, even liquid in stocks is good enough. I keep enough liquid that do do not need to work for 5 years at least, so I don’t not really let corporate fuck w me.
Lmao @pinging1 you have no idea how someone might not have savings? Smh
OP, you’re a really kind friend to lend some words of comfort. A good reminder for your friend is to say “You are not your job and this won’t be your last chance to find the right fit.” Sure, many people on Blind might tie their worth to their title, accomplishments, and TC, but fundamentally your job should be an expression of your passion, what you love to do because you’re 1. Good at it, and 2. Always interested in being better at it. No one can be passionate in an environment where they’re belittled, micromanaged, or unappreciated. I’m glad she is no longer going through that and as she goes through applications and interviews, she’ll see how many great opportunities there are out there for her. And I’m finding a new role, the match will be mutual on both ends so that will be a new working relationship, completely unrelated to her last role. Like any relationship! Also encourage your friend to examine her experience getting PIPed for things she could have done differently. There might be some accountability which she can learn from which will help her build confidence that she won’t fall into similar traps in the past. Overall, just keep being there for her and help her tap into your network. Good luck to you both!
Incredible words. Thank you OkKaren
Take it as a blessing in disguise. A time to self reflect and work on the weaknesses. So that you will level up in life as a whole.
A $ucking company is all you can tell her and nobody give a dam about that shit as there are tons of opportunities out there. She will be amazed on how+ve it will be
In Amazon, your manager is not there to support your career. Since Amazon has attracted a lot of shady managers, it's a common practice to quietly keep their reports on "dev plan" in HR system without even a sign of performance concern or feedback, and later surprise them with a PIP built on pretext reasons. HR is not there to protect you because your manager's monologue is the source of truth. So, often undeserving candidates gets pushed out based on wrong reasons (mentioned in legal PIP document) to meet double digit % of forced PIP targets. Reading such lies about yourself in the emails and the legal documents to be signed, is mentally disturbing and confidence crushing. The average stay in a team at Amazon is less than one year, and the average stay in Amazon is less than 1.5 years. That is why Amazon is always hiring. Managers are rarely PIP'ed for poor performance. Engineers are consistently thrown under the bus.
This! This guy knows what he is talking about.
Exactly what’s happening in Alexa. Have a friend in Alexa Excellence who is having a terrible time from his manager who is right out lying with no shame. He provided solid proof (past emails, chime conversations, etc.) just to be turned down. Manager takes off for a few days or weeks every time she is called on her lie. This is Alexa. God knows what’s going on in rest of the company.
Following! I am in the same boat now. I got PIPed recently and I was able to find a job but I am so terrified this might happen again in the new job. How do people move on?
Where did u find a job? How long did it take? And on ur last question, maybe therapy?
I got a job at Microsoft. It took me about 2 months.
