🏖️California: Short term pain, long term gain 💰

PS: Not trying to change anyone’s opinion, sharing my story Many people get caught up in the high cost of living in California and dream of moving out of state for a bigger house. While lower taxes and housing costs can be tempting, they often overlook the long-term career opportunities California offers. I once faced a similar choice: a remote, high-paying job and a move to Austin. However, I worried about finding similar opportunities elsewhere. Looking back, staying in California was the best decision. The access to startups here fueled my career: 2015: Joined a startup instead of a remote role. 2018: Startup IPO, I made over $2 million. 2019: Joined Airbnb. 2020: Airbnb IPO, stock value reached $3.2 million. 2024: Joined another promising startup with stock valued at $1.6 million. California offers a wealth of career opportunities, especially for those in tech. While the cost of living is high, the potential rewards can be much greater. Don't get hung up on short-term inconveniences; focus on building a bright future. If you stay and try (you may or may not make it big). But if you leave you are definitely not making it big. Choice is yours #tech #california

U got lucky, thats all.

It wasn’t luck, I didn’t gamble and join small startups. I just join hot late stage startups that are bound to go ipo in couple of years. Little common sense and planning help finding the right one. There are plenty of great companies with lots of potential

If I recall correctly. Less than 5% gamblers are profitable. Less than 3% of companies hit it big. Rather why not settle, for a moderate 9-5 in mcol , raise a family, enjoy other things in life. The winner of a rat race is still a rat.

Outlier What about folks who can't make your kind of money? California is heaven for wealthy folks.

How’d you compare California to Seattle.

Airbnb 720k OP Apr 18

Seattle still has long way to go when it comes to startup ecosystem. I think the next big companies will be in AI space and there are many competing in California.

Uber cbrijahr Apr 18

Seattle is actually better than bay area

I joined startups and they never exited

Twilio nouser99 Apr 18

You mean to say everyone who stays back in California can make this kind of money?

If you keep buying lottery tickets you can become a millionaire

Hi, can I please DM you for a referral? There’s 2 position I would be a great candidate for.

Airbnb againNow Apr 22

Referrals don’t mean shit. I have 0% success rate.

It’s good that you were at right place at right time. Bigger question is, did you actually make profit? All these stocks were skyrocketing back then but these are at 20-30% of value now from ATH.

Airbnb 720k OP Apr 18

Yes, averaged 3-4x on each. I used only the ipo price for the numbers I reported. Airbnb is higher than its ipo price right now. (I cashed out most of it)

Op seems like you are great visionary, can you please help this cohort with the list of companies which can turn out to be similar to your story ?
