Does anyone know any brokerages that allow a "Non U.S. Person" to open an account with them to invest in Certificate of Deposits? I'm currently in F1 STEM OPT, and I do not pass the substantial presence test yet to qualify as a U.S. Person And consequently, I should certify a W-8BEN to brokerages for tax purposes, but all the below brokerages/banks ask that I confirm that I'm a U.S person and fill out form W-9 while completing their online application, which doesn't apply to me. Please let me know if you know any brokerages that cater to F1 individuals and let's you submit W-8BEN for tax certification. Following are the ones I tried Fidelity Investments TD Ameritrade Interactive Brokers Capital One 360 Savings CD Discover CD TC: 160K YOE: 3 Edit: I already have Robinhood which lets you submit W-8BEN #personalfinance #investments
You can open one as long as you have ssn. There is no mandate of nationality here for opening an account afaik
I see, it appears F1 individuals are a special case. They aren't considered as residents for tax purposes until they stay in US for 5 calendar years even though they have SSN. Luckily I've been here for that long, so I can open an account with most of the brokerages. ๐
I have an account with robinhood and Roth IRA with fidelity. I am on F1 as well
yep right, I know Robinhood lets you complete W-8 BEN, but were you asked to certify your tax residency status for Fidelity Roth IRA account? If so did you fill out W-8 BEN or W9?
