I made this list for some of the major cities and ranked them according to their COL according to this website: https://www.bestplaces.net/cost-of-living/ 100.0 is the national average so if something is, say, 120.0 it is 20% more expensive than the national average and if it is, say, 90.0 it is 10% cheaper than the national average. After looking at this, all I can say is that SF is outrageously expensive, even when compared to other HCOL cities like NYC, LA, Seattle etc. 1. San Francisco – 269.3 2. San Jose – 214.5 3. New York – 187.2 4. Los Angeles – 173.3 5. Seattle – 172.3 6. Boston – 162.4 7. San Diego – 160.1 8. Washington D.C. – 152.1 9. Portland – 130.8 10. Denver – 128.7 11. Miami - 123.1 12. Austin – 119.3 13. Sacramento – 118.2 14. Las Vegas – 111.6 15. Atlanta – 107.5 16. Chicago – 106.9 17. Minneapolis – 106.5 18. Orlando – 104.1 19. Phoenix – 103.7 20. Dallas – 101.6 21. Nashville – 101.4 22. Philadelphia – 101.2 23. Tampa – 100.1 24. Fort Worth – 99.8 25. Charlotte – 98.9 26. Houston – 96.5 27. Jacksonville – 93.5 28. Tucson – 91.6 29. Albuquerque – 91.1 30. San Antonio – 89.7 31. Louisville – 88.4 32. Baltimore – 88.2 33. Detroit – 87.6 34. Pittsburgh – 87.5 35. Kansas City – 86.2 36. Columbus – 85.5 37. Oklahoma City – 85.4 38. Milwaukee – 84.9 39. Cincinnati – 84.6 40. Indianapolis – 83.5 41. El Paso – 81.4 42. St. Louis – 81.3 43. Cleveland – 72.6
Let’s all move to Cleveland and get a TC jump!
Haha was honestly quite surprised how much lower it was than the rest of the cities.
Detroit is a bit skewed because outside of midtown/downtown, the city is an S-hole and everyone lives in the suburbs. I wonder what other cities are skewed like this
many of the cities on the bottom 1/3 of the list are similar lol
How about Manhattan vs SF? Most jobs in NYC are actually in Manhattan.
Manhattan specifically would be 258.3, so only a bit lower than SF.
I’d much rather live in SF or NYC and pay an extra $1k more in rent for an extra $250k in pay ($250k to $500k). No point living in a LCOL area if there are no good jobs there.
I think the real COL difference between cities comes in if/when your looking to settle down and buy a house, not just rent. So long-term.
City and State tax? Seattle is better on that front.
The real question is, starting from the bottom of the list and working upwards, what is the first non shitty city? Phoenix? Chicago?
Where is Memphis?
Medina WA = 446
