Amazon L5 to Microsoft L63

Current TC: ~230k with stock appreciation Msft Offer: 155/240/35 - TC: 215k (without joining bonus and annual bonus target 15%) Yoe: 8 Role: Sr SWE Location: Redmond, WA I’m L5 at Amazon and might make it to L6 in next year or so (promo doc in progress) but based on what I have heard promo doesn’t bring in much TC. Plus it brings in a lot of work load. My current team is pretty good and wlb is nice (40~45hr/week) I got above offer from Microsoft (Azure) but its too low for a Sr SDE level. I also have competing offer which goes as high as 270k but at lesser known companies with more work load. I want a stable job with decent work load so prefer MSFT, but don’t want such a downgrade in pay. 1. How much can I negotiate here? “ 2. Is it a good move from Amazon to Microsoft? Team looks amazing and have an external facing product with a good business model. Interviews went really well.

With 15% bonus and sign on/4 it is 240k tc, not bad. 10k more base and 25k more sign on should be doable. Another strategy is get your L6 title and then you can try L65/L64

Amazon whattochus OP Oct 1, 2020

Signon cash is just first year, so i would keep it out of calculation. And other than that I guess my question is can I negotiate it to go up to 270k to match with other offers

Mapbox Ahsuxh Oct 1, 2020

I would typically divide the sign on cash over 4 years.

Amazon amzni Oct 1, 2020

Why not ask microsoft to match it?

Amazon whattochus OP Oct 1, 2020

That's the plan, but my first conversation with HR felt like matching 270k TC at L63 is very difficult for them. I think they can, I mean its Azure if anyone can do it in MSFT it should be Azure.

Microsoft nTXn20 Oct 1, 2020

Nah Unless they bump you to 64 at least

Microsoft RonJeremy😈 Oct 1, 2020

Microsoft can do better on base imo try upping it. I’m same level at 177 base. Stock at 250 after appreciation.

Amazon amzni Oct 1, 2020

250 is tc?

Microsoft RonJeremy😈 Oct 1, 2020

275

Amazon harekrsna Oct 1, 2020

That looks like standard L5 offer and I have seen more TC for L5 ( 380k ). When you jump you should look into following WLB Team and what you will TC If you just looking for WLB and stay at AMz as it’s good . When you get L6 and if you don’t have WLB then think of moving . I wouldn’t move with that TC

Amazon whattochus OP Oct 1, 2020

380k for Amazon L5, are you serious. I don't think that's true even for external hires. The only reason it might be true is with someone who joined at right time at L5 couple of years back and with stock appreciation it looks like 380k today. And that is great btw 380k at L5. If I made even close to that, I wouldn't even be talking to MSFT , lol

Amazon harekrsna Oct 1, 2020

Sorry 280 iPhone auto correct ! It was for L6 .

You can get more base. I'm technical but not SWE. I went from L5 to L63 with a 160 base.

Amazon whattochus OP Oct 1, 2020

Is this Seattle or Bay Area?

Seattle

Amazon crKS71 Oct 1, 2020

Competing offers should help you get a better match, if not then screw MS. Also Azure is known to have bad wlb but you can always move around to chiller teams when inside.

Microsoft Gdhue47Vd Feb 10, 2022

Nope, not easy to move around in MS. You have to go through full loop again. Not worth it. Don’t recommend joining azure. Do more interviews and use MS offer to negotiate

VMware zeepa Oct 1, 2020

Stay

VMware FjYa47 Oct 1, 2020

OP, just FYI, some Azure teams have terrible WLB.
