When I first moved to US, the demand for software devs was much higher than what universities could supply. It was a win-win because tech companies could speed up development, citizens had their pick in job market (within reasonable parameters), and people like me got an opportunity to build a career. In last 2 years or so the job market has turned for worse. Companies on average laid off 10-20% of their staff. While laying off companies couldn't discriminate against H1Bs, so they chose different parameters. The supply demand dynamics have flipped. There are fewer jobs and higher number of eligible candidates. It's very rarely true these days that companies are hiring H1Bs to fill gap in labor market. The bar for me keeping my job is much lower than some citizen to replace me, primarily because of interview difficulty + ramp-up investment. There's no point in me giving up my job voluntarily. But I think it would be fair if this country decided to pause/cancel H1B until supply demand dynamics flipped again and there is a noticeable gap in labor market.
H1B isnt only for devs. Youre tunnel visioned
Most visas still go to devs. Have you seen how WITCH companies operate?
He's specifically talking about H1Bs for devs though. The gov't hands out H1Bs to companies for positions.
Are you a noob? H1b is THE thing companies want right now with their “do more with less” agenda. Only h1b slaves will work 2x for 0.75x pay. IF they hire in USA that is.. most of the hiring is in India anyway.
That's an issue. Companies are abusing the system for their own bottom line. It's not in general public's interest
It never was 🤷🏻♂️ its to keep american companies profitable and competitive in the world by luring in hard working people and exploiting them.
Agreed OP. I would support to close the H1B program, and give existing H1Bs all GC. No more H1B Visas, or H4 and no OPT for F1.
Disagree. You want these US based, but global companies to get the best talent in the world. If these big companies are successful, America gets more $$$ in the long run. EDIT: I take back this statement given the conversation we had in the comments.
Yeah but the issue is that much of the time the talent being brought in isn't necessarily more talented. It's just cheaper. There should be a much higher bar to hire folks on H1B to ensure that people are truly being hired based on competency
Best/better is subjective. In current job market many without a job are equally talented and can do the job just as well.
H1B shouldn't exist and should be grandfathered. Furthermore if a US company has a mass layoff, they should be forced to lay off H1Bs first, regardless of role.
The jobs would simply move abroad. And so the housing, services, travel etc that benefit from H1b employees spending in the USA will be gone. So will the large amount of social security and medicare taxes.
If that were true why not transfer H1Bs to India and pay 50% less? More $$$
Fix your immigration system
100%. We should stop all immigration for at least 5 years.
