Hit household NW of 4M this week. 3.5M invested and 500K home equity in VHCOL. I'm burnt out and debating if I should quit in this bad job market without anything lined up?? Spouse makes 350K, which can cover our VHCOL life. Also, 3.5M invested might grow 8-10% / yr and might give additional safety net if needed. I grew up with money insecurity (like many here), lived in a scarcity mindset all my life, so I can not get myself to quit. Also scared that future managers will take the employment gap negatively. I should be celebrating my disciplined NW growth, but I'm depressed and miserable. Need advice or alternate evaluation of my situation. My TC - soon to be 0. #personal finance #mentalhealth #advice
Can you coast while you search for a new job ? Maybe a change of employer might be beneficial mentally.
đŽâđ¨ and why can't you take all your PTO? Why can't you do FMLA?
It's better not to think about it like quitting. Think of it as starting a new venture, even if that is making $0 while you build a boat in your garage. You can always go back. You will still have valuable skills and can tell a story about what you did in the meantime. But if you're doing something that makes you very happy, you won't want to go back to the grind. Imagine yourself in 2 years. You are doing something healthy, mentally and physically, and rewarding. You have $4M net worth, or maybe 4.5-5 at that point. Somebody offers you a million dollars a year to give up your great life and to suffer instead. Do you take it? If so, probably shouldn't quit now. If you say no way then now is the right time to start your new chapter.
Congrats on your and your partnerâs achievement!
Thank you! Genuinely appreciate the acknowledgement
Trust me, the employment gap will not matter for future employment (within reason). I took a year off and I barely got any questions about it and still got lots of interviews. A friend who took 1.5 years off experienced the same
Age?
Doesnât matter what anyone says, youâre a slave to that mindset and will keep grinding and being unhappy
Hmm, probably. But this time, I will likely have to change something.
Nah you wonât, itâs evident - deep down you know you should but you wonât. Even with $10M youâll live in fear of relaxing. Seek therapy, lots of folks on this app have an unhealthy relationship with money as a result of growing up without much.
Try taking a two week vacation first.
Took vacation early in the yr. Didn't change a thing. Came back and 1 week later, back to the same feeling of dread
Are you going to keep paying the mortgage according to schedule or are you going to pay it down / off faster?
Why should I pay faster. Not looking to FIRE yet.
Unless you plan to live in your current house the rest of your life, why try and pay it off faster? I assume majority of people who live in VHCOL only does so because of work, and once they stop working, they move elsewhere for retirement, unless theyâve just got more money then they know what to do with so they donât care how expensive things are.
