I’m a software engineer on recommendations and would like to use my expertise to contribute more to the humane tech movement but not sure where to start. Do any of you a) have a technical background and b) are actively involved in any ethics working groups or oversight at your company? #ai #ethics
I personally think this area is convoluted as fuck. It would be accurate to title these efforts as marketing or public relation management rather than ethics or whatever nice sounding name they put on it. Companies don’t do it because they care about humans, they do it because otherwise they get bad reputation. Are you in for that OP? Is it what really what you think it is?
I hear you and agree you. In most cases these groups are just formalities or PR managers as you said. And honestly I don’t blame the companies for that since they have almost no incentives to make actual humane tech (which would involve things like reducing screen time and engagement). But I still (maybe naively) think there is some progress to be made that can benefit both parties (for-profit companies and users). At least I see cases within my own company (which is no longer Uber btw). If not now then probably in the next few years as 1) people become more educated and disillusioned with the way technology currently fits into their lives and 2) tech becomes more and more litigious, which will start cutting into profits. But yeah my expectations are pretty low for now, don’t worry ;) just hoping to find others who are passionate about this area
