I currently work somewhere that I really like. Work, culture and people are all close to perfect. Only problem is the pay is a little lower and promotions aren’t as easy to come by. Got an offer at NetJets, pay bump and title bump (Mid -> Senior). I feel like an idiot because from a career move it makes sense to take the offer, but I’m really comfortable at my current place and am thinking about staying. I should also reach senior in a year if I stay (est TC 150k). Should I take the new position or stay where I’m comfortable? Current TC: 110k New TC: 172k Note: the new place matches up to 20% for 401k which is basically an extra $20k yearly. #engineering #software #swe #offer
Challenge yourself. Take the new offer. Unless you saw some major red flags. You’ll get comfortable at new job. Just takes a da months but it’s worth the pay difference and 401k match.
Inform your old employer you have an offer and ask them to match. If they say they can't then ask them how close they can get and you will consider their offer as well. This way you can see what you are really walking away from. And maybe they will promote you now rather than allow you to leave. Many times have I been promised some promotion and never received it bc I didn't force their hand with a competing offer. If you want respect you have to demand it. And they will respect you more for doing so.
Thanks for the advice. I’ll give this a shot
No brainer for 50+% bump
Match is 60c per dollar up to max of 20%. The senior is as far as you’d get unless you move into a different role.1-4% annual raise. If potential to grow at current place is high I’d ask for a match. NetJets just laid off and has newish CIO. Morale is low and it’s toxic for now.
bonus is discretionary (they emphasize that)so nothing set in stone. might vary from what you stated in survey.
Comfortable can be an enemy of growth. Take the offer.
