By then I’ll have worked in the industry almost a decade, at 32 - and will have maybe ~400/500k saved, not accounting for wedding, purchasing a home, kid(s), etc. I’m not really that passionate about tech long term (non-SWE). And don’t really need 10 mill in retirement (contrary to popular belief on Blind haha). Has anyone successfully coasted a bit at that age / net worth? Taken a pay cut to pursue other hobbies fully for a year? Moved abroad? Weighing my options. Curious to hear others’ stories.
DM me! I’m planning the same this year and already quit. Nothing near your NW though
DM’ed you!
Took a year off to travel in late 30s. Definitely worth it and we still talk about it regularly. Highlight of the decade if not more.
How much do you spend for 1 year of travel?
Thinking about doing the same, once all my RSUs vest. Personally I'm thinking about taking a job with more of a local impact. A job where I can interact with people in my community more. I expect to take a pretty significant pay cut. The first job I want to take is just as a bartender somewhere for a little while. Then I can go get something more long-term. Maybe go back to school and get trained to be a high school teacher? Maybe a private programming tutor?
Kinda on the same boat. Spend time doing something fulfilling, helping others and with a proper sense of community. 👊
Into this idea.
I'm planning to do the same in 4-5 years. I have a FIRE target NW of around 1.5m and once I reach the goal, I'll say goodbye to tech and get one of those low stress jobs. Right now I'm halfway there.
Dang! Congrats. Are you in your 30’s? I’d love to have that much already saved at 29 lol.
Example of low stress job?
I’m taking a sabbatical and I’m in my late 30s but got a few years of savings so I can afford it. If you got the savings, I say take a half year to a year off. That extra time really puts u in a frame of mind to know what u really want to do next in life
Leaving tech or any other profession after 10 years grind is most foolish decision because that’s when life gets easier and you start earning more money due to your experience. Just find a job with good wlb
I mean, I could become a manager and potentially coast?
It depends. If OP just isnt motivated and inspired by tech then being a manager won’t help. More money might not help that too. A change in environment or profession might though. I know we put a lot of emphasis on money here in Blind and its clique to say this but we only got one life. Shouldn’t waste it just to make more money
Have 3.5 NW and looking to do the same in 4-5 years where I hope to be at 5-7NW. I am early 40 and wife mid-30
Do you include a 401k in your NW?
I do!
What do you do in tech? I’m also non SWE but thinking of switching to SWE since my role may be deprecated.

Doing something similar this year. Quitting W2 to travel. My household NW is 850k
Nice, congrats! Are you early 30’s?
Yep
